The Hermes Agent MCP server is the way Hermes connects to outside business tools through the Model Context Protocol, and it's also the way Claude Code, Codex or Cursor can plug into Hermes itself.

Hermes Agent is the free, open-source AI agent from Nous Research, and both directions run through one command, hermes mcp.

The question I get from business owners is always some version of this.

"I've got Hermes answering my chats and Claude Code building my sites, so why can't they just work together?"

They can, and MCP is the bridge.

MCP, the Model Context Protocol, is a shared standard that lets an agent call tools living in another program.

In this post I'll explain what the Hermes Agent MCP server is, how to set it up in both directions, and seven practical ways a business can use it.

I'm working from the official Hermes docs, the official mcp-serve plugin page and the CLI help, so I'll stick to what Nous Research documents and I won't invent results.

Hermes Agent MCP Server Business Uses At A Glance

This table maps each business job to the direction and the setting that makes it work.

What The Hermes Agent MCP Server Is, In Plain English

Think of MCP as a universal plug.

Any tool that speaks MCP can be plugged into any agent that speaks MCP.

Hermes speaks it in both directions.

When Hermes is the client, it gains tools from other programs, such as GitHub, a database or your own internal API.

When Hermes is the server, other agents gain access to what Hermes knows, which is mainly your messaging conversations across Telegram, Discord, Slack, WhatsApp, Signal, Matrix and more.

The CLI help sums it up as "Manage MCP server connections and run Hermes as an MCP server."

The Problem It Solves For A Business

Most businesses I work with end up with several agents that never talk to each other.

The coding agent builds the landing page, then someone copies the link into Slack by hand, then someone else tells the client on WhatsApp.

Each handover is a place where work gets lost or delayed.

MCP removes those handovers, because one agent can call the other directly.

In my Codex and Hermes video, I showed Codex calling the Hermes MCP server and listing my previous Hermes conversations, which is exactly that kind of bridge.

How To Set Up The Hermes Agent MCP Server

Direction 1: add tools to Hermes

MCP support ships with the standard install.

The quickest route is the catalog of servers that Nous staff have reviewed.

hermes mcp # interactive picker (default)
hermes mcp catalog # plain-text list, scriptable
hermes mcp install deepwiki # install a catalog entry by name

You can also ask Hermes in a chat, for example "add the Linear MCP", and a setup card appears.

In the desktop app, v0.22.0 replaced the MCP tab with a Connectors page that lists hosted apps and your MCP servers in one place.

For anything outside the catalog, hermes mcp add <name> takes --url for a remote server or --command and --args for a local one.

Then hermes mcp list shows what's connected, and hermes mcp test <name> checks one server.

Direction 2: run Hermes as a server

The current docs ship this as the official mcp-serve plugin, listed in the catalog on 21 October 2026.

hermes plugins install mcp-serve

Then you add Hermes to your MCP client's config, and the client starts it for you over stdio.

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "hermes": {
      "command": "hermes",
      "args": ["mcp-serve"]
    }
  }
}

Older builds, including v0.22.1, have the server built in as hermes mcp serve, and those clients use the args ["mcp", "serve"].

The plugin page says you change those args to ["mcp-serve"] once you move to the plugin.

Use Case 1: Let Your Coding Agent Update Clients In Chat

Say Claude Code finishes a client's new landing page.

With Hermes connected as an MCP server, Claude Code can call messages_send and post the update to the client's Telegram or Slack chat through Hermes's own send path.

It can also call channels_list to see where it's allowed to send.

The docs say sending needs the Hermes gateway running, because the platform connections live there.

Reading conversations works without the gateway, because the server reads Hermes's own session store.

Use Case 2: Answer Hermes Approvals From Another Agent

Hermes asks for approval before risky actions.

The MCP server exposes permissions_list_open and permissions_respond, so an MCP client can see pending approval requests and allow or deny them.

That's useful when your team lives inside one coding tool all day and doesn't want to switch windows for every prompt.

I'd still keep a human in that loop for anything that touches a client's money or data.

Use Case 3: Connect Hermes To Your Project And Code Tools

This is the other direction.

The docs say MCP gives Hermes access to tools such as GitHub, databases, file systems, browser stacks and internal APIs without writing a native Hermes tool first.

Hosted servers such as Linear, Sentry, Atlassian, Asana, Figma and Stripe usually need OAuth, and the docs say you set auth: oauth and Hermes handles the sign-in flow.

On a headless server, hermes mcp login <server> --flow device signs in without a browser.

If your team already uses Claude Code, the docs say hermes import-agent claude-code migrates its MCP servers, and my Hermes import agent guide explains how.

Use Case 4: Lock A Payments Tool Down To Safe Actions

Some MCP servers can do expensive or irreversible things.

The docs show a Stripe example that registers every tool except delete_customer.

mcp_servers:
  stripe:
    url: "https://mcp.stripe.com"
    tools:
      exclude: [delete_customer]

You can go the other way with include, so a GitHub server only offers create_issue and list_issues.

The docs call this filtering a security control, because the model can't call a tool it never sees.

Use Case 5: Cap Spend On Paid Generation Tools

Image, video and 3D generation servers can spend credits on every call.

The current docs let a server entry declare tool_costs for each tool and a spend_limit per chat.

Once a chat would go past the limit, Hermes asks before every further costed call.

The docs also say a server marked trust: untrusted asks before every write-capable call, and the prompt now names the cost.

For a business, that turns a surprise bill into a question you answer before the money is spent.

Use Case 6: Pair Hermes With The Codex CLI

The docs include one built-in preset, and it's for Codex.

hermes mcp add codex --preset codex

That runs codex mcp-server over stdio, so Hermes can hand coding jobs to Codex as a tool.

It needs the codex CLI installed and on your PATH.

This is the mirror image of my Codex video, where Codex called Hermes instead.

Use Case 7: Give Another Agent Hermes's Web And Browser Tools

With the plugin, hermes mcp-serve --tools adds Hermes's web search, web extract, browser, vision, image generation, skills and text-to-speech tools for the connecting client.

That lets a coding agent research a competitor's page through Hermes, using the providers you've already set up in Hermes.

The plugin page says this mode is off by default and never exposes terminal, file, code execution, process, kanban or delegation tools.

It also says those calls cost whatever your configured provider charges.

The Safety Rules A Business Should Follow

Every MCP server is a piece of software you're inviting in, so review it first.

  • The docs say installing a catalog entry runs whatever its manifest specifies, so read the source:, install.bootstrap: and transport.command: fields before you install.
  • Catalog manifests live in the optional-mcps folder of the Hermes repo on GitHub, and only Nous adds entries.
  • For local servers, Hermes passes only the env you configure plus a safe baseline, which cuts accidental secret leaks.
  • Hermes strips invisible Unicode tag characters from tool results, which the docs describe as a prompt-injection channel.
  • The plugin page warns that a client connected to the Hermes MCP server can read your conversation history and send messages as your connected accounts.

If the agent also runs commands for clients, pair this with a container, as I explain in my Hermes Agent sandbox guide.

The Limits To Know Before You Rely On It

  • The Hermes MCP server is stdio only, so the client launches it as a local process, and the docs suggest a separate adapter if you need HTTP.
  • Sending messages needs the Hermes gateway running.
  • The docs list text-only sends, so messages_send doesn't send attachments.
  • The event queue starts when the server starts, so older history comes from messages_read instead.
  • The server command changed from hermes mcp serve to the mcp-serve plugin, so check your version before copying a config.
