Hermes group chat is the closest thing a small business gets to a staff meeting of AI specialists: you post one brief, and up to six bots weigh in, challenge each other and flag what needs your call.

It lives inside Hermes Desktop's Bot Mode, which ships built in and switched on, so there is no extra add-on to buy or install.

The 2 Nov 2026 release, v0.22.6, adds group chat rename, disband, mentions and attachment paste to the Desktop app.

This page answers the owner's question: is a room of bots worth setting up for a shop, a service firm or an agency, and where does it go wrong?

What A Bot Room Actually Is, In Plain Business Terms

In Hermes, each bot is a profile: its own model, its own instructions, its own skills, its own memory.

A group chat seats between two and six of those bots in one shared conversation.

You write a message, and the bots take up to three rounds of turns to respond, each one replying briefly or staying quiet.

When a bot hits a decision that should be yours, it tags @user and the room shows a needs you badge in your sidebar.

Think of it as a shared desk where a writer, a checker and a researcher can see each other's work before it reaches you.

The official Bot Mode guide describes every piece of this.

Do You Need A Special Plan Or Add-On?

No separate tier is involved.

The Hermes Desktop docs say Bot Mode ships with the app and is on by default, and group chats are part of Bot Mode.

What you do need is a model provider for each bot, since every bot runs whichever model you pin to it.

New bots copy static API keys from your main profile by default; OAuth sign-ins are not copied, so each bot signs in on its own.

If you never want the feature, one switch in Capabilities → Plugins → Bots turns Bot Mode off with no restart, and your profiles and sessions stay put.

Use Case: A Local Shop With Three Seats

Picture a bakery owner who wants a weekly specials post, a stock check and a reply plan for new reviews.

One room, three bots:

  • Copywriter, with a SOUL.md in the shop's voice.
  • Planner, which turns the specials list into a posting order.
  • Checker, told to question prices, allergens and claims before anything goes out.

The owner posts "Here are this week's specials" and lets the room work, then answers whatever the checker escalates.

The value is the checker seeing the copywriter's draft in the same thread instead of the owner copying text between two chats.

Use Case: A Service Firm That Needs A Second Opinion

An accounting or legal-adjacent firm lives on accuracy, so the room is built around review.

Seat an intake bot that summarises a client email, a research bot that pulls the relevant rules from your own notes, and a reviewer bot that only checks.

Address the round with mentions: @intake summarise this, then @reviewer check the summary.

Mentions scope the round to the bots you named, so the others stay out of it.

When a bot wants to run a command, the approval shows up right in the room, and one click on once, session, always or deny answers it.

For a firm handling client material, that inline approval is the feature to rely on.

Use Case: An Agency Running Several Clients

Agencies get the most from the roster, because rooms organise like folders.

Make a section per client, file each client's room into it, and pin the room you open every morning.

Each room row shows stacked member avatars, how many bots are in it, the last line said, a timestamp and the needs-you badge, so a glance tells you which client is waiting.

A bot can sit in several rooms and still keep a single DM row, which keeps the list tidy as you add clients.

If your team uses more than one machine, rooms are mirrored to every gateway your Desktop connects to, so a colleague opening Desktop against the same gateway sees the room and its history.

What v0.22.6 Means For You This Week

The v0.22.6 release notes list Desktop group chat rename, disband, mentions and attachment paste.

How you get it depends on how you installed Hermes:

  • Installed Desktop from the .exe or .dmg installer: it updates with the next bundled release, not this one.
  • Microsoft Store app: it updates through the Store.
  • Command line: hermes update.

The notes say full curated details for this window come with v0.23.0.

The docs already cover rename in Group settings, the rules for disbanding, and how mentions display; attachment paste is listed in the notes without a how-to yet.

Where Time Gets Saved, And Where It Doesn't

The saving is in handoffs, not in raw speed.

Without a room, you are the courier between a writing chat and a checking chat.

With a room, the bots read each other's replies, pull each other in with @name, and only stop for you when they tag you.

Rooms also keep running when you close Desktop, as long as every member is on the same gateway.

What a room won't do is replace your judgement: the docs build in escalation to you, approvals and a Stop button for exactly that reason.

Track your own before-and-after on one recurring task for two weeks before you roll rooms out to everything.

The Risks Owners Should Plan For

  • Silent bots look broken. Not every bot replies to every message; the docs say each bot speaks only when it has something new.
  • Long rooms get forgetful. A turn carries room history only up to about 200 messages or 32,000 characters, whichever comes first.
  • Bloated sessions give empty answers. A member whose hidden session gets too big returns empty replies until you press Compress history for it.
  • Usage adds up. Each bot that takes a turn calls its own model, so a six-bot room uses more model calls than one chat.
  • Disband is final. It removes the room permanently on every client, including ones that were offline.

One send is capped at 10 messages and 3 rounds, so no single brief can run away with your model usage.

When A Bot Fails Or Stalls, You Can See It

Owners worry most about work quietly not getting done.

The room is built to show you the failure instead of hiding it.

If a bot's provider rejects a request or its credentials are wrong, the room reports it as soon as the gateway does, rather than leaving you staring at a "thinking" line.

Unresolved failures stay listed in the collapsed Activity summary, each naming the bot and the first line of the error.

To retry, address that bot again; the room will not resubmit an unclear failure on its own.

A bot that is visibly working can keep its turn for up to three hours, while one that stops reporting is timed out after three minutes of silence.

And if you need everyone to stop, the Stop button cancels what is queued and holds the bots until you mention them again or address the whole room with @all.

For a business, that means a stuck job is a visible line item you can act on, not a mystery you find out about from a client.

Tidy The Roster As Your Bot Count Grows

Once you have a dozen bots, the sidebar gets busy.

Right-click a bot you rarely open and choose Hide Bot; it leaves the list but keeps its room memberships, keeps answering mentions and keeps running its routines.

An eye icon in the Bots header reveals hidden bots when you need them, and shows a dot if one of them has unread activity.

Bot Mode's own sessions also stay out of your main Sessions list, so client rooms never mix with your personal chats.

Keeping Staff And Client Data Separate

Each bot has its own credential store, memory and chat history under its own profile folder.

That lets you give the client-facing writer no access to tools it doesn't need, by ticking skills, toolsets and MCP servers per bot when you create it.

The multi-connection Desktop guide adds that direct mentions and delegation stay on one gateway by default, because crossing machines changes files, credentials and trust.

Keep each client's room on one gateway and you keep that boundary simple.

How To Start Small Without Wasting A Week

  1. Pick one recurring task you already do weekly.
  2. Create two bots in the Bots tab with New Agent: one that drafts, one that checks.
  3. Open New Group Chat, add both, and give the room a name that matches the task.
  4. Run the task in the room for two weeks and note every time you had to step in.
  5. Add a third bot only for the step you kept fixing by hand.

Routines, which are Hermes cron jobs, can post into a member's room session, so a scheduled job can feed the room; the Hermes agent cron job guide shows the scheduling side.

Group Chats On Telegram Or Slack Are A Different Thing

Owners often mean the bot in their team's Telegram group or Slack channel.

That is the Hermes messaging gateway, and the configuration docs give it its own setting, group_sessions_per_user.

It defaults to true, so each person in a shared channel gets a separate session with the agent; false makes the channel one shared conversation.

A Desktop bot room is bots deliberating with each other; a Telegram group is people talking to an agent.

The Bottom Line For A Small Business

Set up a room when a job needs more than one specialist and the handoff between them is where you lose time.

Skip it for one-step tasks; a single bot chat does those with less model usage.

Start with two bots, keep them on one gateway, and add seats only when the room proves itself.

For trainings on building those bots and coaching calls to check your setup, the AI Profit Boardroom covers it step by step.

FAQ: Hermes Group Chat For Small Business

Is Hermes group chat a paid add-on?

No add-on is mentioned in the docs. Bot Mode, which includes group chats, ships built into Hermes Desktop and is on by default.

Can my team see the same bot room from different computers?

Yes, when their Desktops connect to the same gateway. Rooms are mirrored into the shared metadata of every gateway your Desktop is connected to.

What happens if I disband a room by mistake?

It is removed permanently on every client. Creating a new group with the same name starts a fresh room rather than restoring the old one.

Can a bot in the room act without my say-so?

Command approvals appear inside the room and wait for your click on once, session, always or deny. Bots also tag @user to escalate judgement calls to you.
