My top SEO professionals 2026 list is me (Julian Goldie) at number one, followed by Mike King, Kevin Indig, Rand Fishkin, Glenn Gabe, Barry Schwartz, Dan Petrovic, Britney Muller and Crystal Carter.

You should know straight away that this is my own list on my own site.

I've put myself first, and I'd rather you weigh the evidence than trust the order.

The list is built around one question, which is what each person actually did in 2025 and 2026.

Search changed a lot this year, so a ranking based on what somebody did ten years ago won't help your business much.

I've matched each name to the type of business they are most useful for, and every outside fact has a date and a source.

Top SEO Professionals 2026: Top 3 Picks By Business Need

These three picks cover what most business owners ask me about.

  • 🥇 Julian Goldie is my pick if you want SEO content produced by AI agents with a human check, backed by real Search Console numbers.
  • 🥈 Mike King (iPullRank) is the pick for larger companies that need content engineered for AI Mode and AI Overviews.
  • 🥉 Kevin Indig (Growth Memo) is the pick for teams that want user research before they change their strategy.

The remaining six each fit a specific situation, and I'll show you which one below.

How I Ranked These SEO Professionals For 2026

I ranked on recent work, not on reputation.

  • Each person had to publish, ship or present something in 2025 or 2026.
  • Each piece of work had to be something I could open and read at the source.
  • Each piece of work had to help a real business make a better decision this year.
  • Each entry had to connect to the new parts of search, such as AI Mode, AI Overviews, agents or Google's update cycle.

I only used neutral, checkable facts about other people, and I left out anything I couldn't confirm.

The 9 Top SEO Professionals Of 2026, Matched To Your Business

1. Julian Goldie — for owners who want agents to do the work

I've run SEO for over a decade, and I built Goldie Agency into a 7-figure SEO and link-building agency with 70+ people in Bangkok.

In mid-2025 I moved my focus to AI agents that do the SEO for you.

The result is the Agent Operating System, which runs a crew of AI agents with one shared memory.

Its SEO pipeline goes from research to generate to deploy to history.

Each article is written from a real video transcript, so the agents can't invent features or numbers.

My guide to Claude AI SEO shows a new page reaching page one of Google in 14 hours.

The same guide shows 4,310 clicks and 122,674 impressions in 90 days, straight from Search Console.

On 19 August 2026 I published my breakdown of the August 2026 spam update, with 16 months of Search Console data from a site my agents publish.

I also run GoldieBench, which scores AI models on one-shot builds.

Best for: Owners, agencies and creators who want output without hiring a big team.

How to work with me: Book a free SEO strategy session or join the SEO Elite Circle.

2. Mike King — for enterprise and technical teams

Mike King is the founder and CEO of iPullRank.

His agency is behind the Relevance Engineering framework, which treats content as passages that AI systems retrieve.

iPullRank published a recap of his AI Mode webinar with Andrea Volpini on 3 July 2025.

That session explained query fan-out, where AI Mode turns one question into many hidden searches.

He also built Qforia, a tool that simulates those hidden searches.

Profound announced on 31 July 2026 that iPullRank had become a Profound Agency Partner.

Best for: Large sites with developers and a content team.

How to learn from him: Read the webinar recap and share it with your technical lead.

3. Kevin Indig — for teams that want user research

Kevin Indig publishes the Growth Memo newsletter.

He and Amanda Johnson published an AI Mode user behaviour study on 6 October 2025.

The study analysed 250 recorded sessions, and Search Engine Journal reported 37 participants across seven tasks.

The main pattern was that people read the AI answer and seldom click away from it.

He published a round-up of his 2026 research on 24 June 2026.

Best for: Marketing leaders who need evidence for a budget decision.

How to learn from him: Subscribe to Growth Memo and start with the AI Mode study.

4. Rand Fishkin — for brands tracking AI visibility

Rand Fishkin co-founded Moz, and today he runs SparkToro.

He published research on 28 January 2026 with Patrick O'Donnell of Gumshoe.ai.

Six hundred volunteers ran 12 prompts through ChatGPT, Claude and Google's AI, and that created 2,961 responses.

The tools gave the same brand list in fewer than one in a hundred runs.

His takeaway was that brands should track how often they appear across many answers, not their position in one.

Best for: Brand owners about to pay for an AI visibility tracker.

How to learn from him: Read that research before you sign up to any tracking tool.

5. Glenn Gabe — for sites hit by an update

Glenn Gabe is the president of G-Squared Interactive, known as GSQi.

His blog covered the May 2026 broad core update on 10 June 2026.

He published case studies from the August 2026 spam update on 31 August 2026.

He also wrote a guide to finding and organising AI Mode queries on 13 August 2026.

Best for: Publishers and e-commerce sites that have seen a sudden traffic change.

How to learn from him: Read his post for the update that matches the date your traffic moved.

6. Barry Schwartz — for anyone who needs the news fast

Barry Schwartz founded Search Engine Roundtable in 2003.

He reported the March 2026 core update on 27 March 2026.

He reported on 8 October 2026 that the September 2026 spam update had finished.

His daily search forum recap is the quickest way I know to keep up.

Best for: Agency owners who need to brief clients the same day.

How to learn from him: Check his site at the start and end of every rollout.

7. Dan Petrovic — for people who want the mechanics

Dan Petrovic is the managing director of DEJAN in Brisbane.

He published "AI Mode Internals" on 28 May 2025.

The post reverse-engineers Google's AI Mode and concludes that it works much like Gemini.

He has followed it with more experiments on fan-out queries and grounding.

These are his own tests and not official Google documentation, so I use them as ideas to check.

Best for: Technical marketers and tool builders.

How to learn from him: Read "AI Mode Internals" and then follow the DEJAN blog.

8. Britney Muller — for teams new to AI

Britney Muller is an AI educator and advisor with an SEO background.

She gave the SEO keynote at brightonSEO San Diego on 24 September 2025.

Her talk was titled "Stop talking about AI, start using it: A marketer's playbook".

She teaches a course called Actionable AI for Marketers on Maven.

Best for: Marketing teams that want to use AI properly and not just talk about it.

How to learn from her: Watch her talks first, then consider the course.

9. Crystal Carter — for small business owners

Crystal Carter is Head of SEO Communications at Wix.

Wix announced the AI Visibility Overview on 16 July 2025, which shows how a site appears in AI answers.

She co-hosted "Optimizing for AI Visibility on Wix" with Einat Hoobian-Seybold, and Wix published it on 4 August 2025.

Her material lives on the Wix SEO Learning Hub.

Best for: Owners running their own website without an SEO team.

How to learn from her: Watch the AI visibility webinar and apply one tip to your home page.

Top SEO Professionals 2026 By Business Type

Your situation Who I'd start with Why
You're a solo owner with no SEO team Crystal Carter and Julian Goldie You get plain-English basics and agents that do the work
You run an agency Barry Schwartz and Glenn Gabe You can brief clients on updates with real analysis
You run a large or technical site Mike King and Dan Petrovic You learn how AI retrieval actually works
You lead a marketing team Kevin Indig and Britney Muller You get user research and practical AI training
You sell a brand people ask AI about Rand Fishkin You learn how to measure AI visibility properly
You're a creator with videos Julian Goldie Your recordings become grounded articles

What Changed In SEO In 2026, In Business Terms

I'll keep this simple, because the detail matters less than the effect on your business.

Google now answers many questions itself with AI Overviews and AI Mode.

That means your page can inform the answer even when the visitor never clicks.

Kevin Indig's study found that people mostly stay inside the AI Mode answer.

Google also moved faster this year, with spam updates in March, June, August and September 2026.

It ran core updates in March and May as well.

Each update is a moment when thin, copied or manipulative pages can lose traffic.

Measurement changed too.

Rand Fishkin's research shows that an AI tool will rarely give the same brand list twice.

So a report that says you rank second in an AI answer isn't telling you much.

The useful number is how often you appear across lots of answers.

People call this new work AEO or GEO, and I cover my approach in my post on the king of AEO.

How A Business Actually Uses These People

Here's a realistic month for three kinds of business.

A local service business

The owner watches Crystal Carter's AI visibility webinar and rewrites the home page to answer the main customer question first.

The owner then books a strategy session to find which keywords are winnable.

An agent drafts one helpful article a week from the owner's own notes, and the owner checks each one.

A small agency

The agency lead reads Barry Schwartz each morning during a rollout.

When an update finishes, the lead reads Glenn Gabe's analysis and checks which client sites moved.

Agents prepare the client report, and an account manager reviews it before it's sent.

A creator or coach

The creator records videos as normal.

Each transcript becomes a grounded article through an agent pipeline like mine.

The creator reads Rand Fishkin's research and stops worrying about a single AI answer.

I'm not promising income from any of this, because results depend on your niche, your offer and your consistency.

How To Pick Who To Follow Or Hire This Year

Start by deciding whether you need knowledge or delivery.

If you need knowledge, follow two or three people from this list for free.

If you need delivery, hire carefully and ask these questions.

  • What did you publish or ship in the last twelve months?
  • Can you show a case study with a start date, an end date and real numbers?
  • How do you measure visibility in AI Overviews and AI Mode?
  • Where do the links come from, and who checks the content?
  • Can we begin with one small project and measure it?

Not everyone on this list takes clients, so check each person's own site before you ask.

Who are the top SEO professionals to know in 2026?

My list is Julian Goldie, Mike King, Kevin Indig, Rand Fishkin, Glenn Gabe, Barry Schwartz, Dan Petrovic, Britney Muller and Crystal Carter.

I rank myself first because it's my own list, so please check the sources.

A small business usually needs plain-English education first, which is where Crystal Carter and Britney Muller help.

You can't, because several of them are researchers, reporters or educators.

Check each person's own site to see whether they take clients.

Ask what they shipped in the last year and ask for case studies with dates and numbers.

Ask how they measure AI visibility, and ask to start with one small project.
