An AEO audit is a check of how AI tools like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude and Google's AI Overviews answer your buyers' questions, and whether those answers name your business or a competitor.
For a business owner, it's really a lead audit, because every AI answer that names three competitors and not you is an enquiry you never see.
If you want to see your own answers with an expert next to you, book a free SEO strategy session and get a custom AI visibility plan.
This page is the business version, so I'll show you the five lead leaks an AEO audit usually finds and how different kinds of businesses fix them.
I'll also show you how to run one without a big budget, and when it's worth getting help.
What Is An AEO Audit, And Why Should A Business Owner Care?
AEO means answer engine optimisation, which is the work of getting your business named and cited when people ask AI tools for advice.
An AEO audit is the first step, because it records what those tools say about you today.
You take the questions your customers really ask, put them to each AI tool and write down who gets recommended, which websites get cited and whether the facts about you are right.
My strategy session page sums up why this matters, because it says people now use AI tools to compare companies, research solutions and decide which brands to trust.
It also says that if those platforms don't mention your business, potential customers may find a competitor instead.
That's the whole business case in two sentences.
| Old way of checking visibility | New way with an AEO audit |
|---|---|
| You check where you rank on Google for a few keywords | You check whether AI tools recommend you for the questions buyers ask |
| You look at traffic charts | You look at who the AI names, what it cites and what it gets wrong |
| You assume a top ranking means you get the enquiry | You see the competitors the AI picks before anyone clicks |
If you want the deeper background on answer engines, my King of AEO post explains how I approach them every day.

Lead Leak 1: The AI Recommends Your Competitors For "Best" Questions
The most common finding is that the AI names competitors for best-of questions and leaves you out.
A best-of question is something like "who is the best accountant for small businesses in Manchester?"
These are the questions closest to a sale, so they're the ones I put first in every audit.
The usual cause is that the competitors appear on the comparison articles, review sites and directories the AI cites, and you don't.
The fix is coverage on those sources, not more blog posts on your own site.
My strategy session page says AI platforms look for consistent signals across the wider web, such as trusted publications, expert articles, independent reviews, comparisons and credible third-party references.
Lead Leak 2: The AI States The Wrong Facts About You
The second finding surprises people, because the AI does mention them but gets something wrong.
The errors to look for are out-of-date prices, services you no longer offer and the wrong location.
A buyer who reads a wrong fact in an AI answer either rules you out or arrives with the wrong expectations.
The fix is cheap, because you correct the facts on your own site, your profiles and your listings so they all say the same thing.
Google's own guidance includes keeping your Merchant Center and Business Profile information up to date, which helps with exactly this.
Lead Leak 3: The AI Can't Read Your Website
The third finding is technical, and it's more common than you'd think.
Some sites block the crawlers that AI search tools use, often by accident through a security setting or an old robots.txt rule.
OpenAI says it uses OAI-SearchBot to surface websites in ChatGPT's search features and recommends allowing it in robots.txt if you want to appear there.
Perplexity says the same about PerplexityBot for its search results.
Google says a page must be indexed and eligible to show a snippet to appear as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode.
I checked OpenAI's crawler page, Perplexity's crawler page and Google's guide to AI features on 17 October 2026.
Ask whoever manages your website to confirm none of those crawlers is blocked on your important pages.

Lead Leak 4: Your Pages Don't Answer The Question
The fourth finding is about how your pages are written.
Many service pages open with a welcome message or a company history, and the actual answer sits halfway down.
An AI looking for a clear passage to quote will pick a competitor whose first sentence commits to an answer.
My own rule is to answer the main question in the first sentence and keep it under fifty words.
I also add a short FAQ section to every important page, built from the questions customers really ask on the phone.
Lead Leak 5: You Have No Baseline, So You Can't Prove Anything
The fifth leak is the one nobody notices until they've spent money.
If you never recorded what the AI said before you changed anything, you can't tell whether the work helped.
The audit fixes that by giving you a dated record of every prompt, every answer and every cited source.
That record also protects you if you hire an agency, because you can check their claims against your own notes.
How Different Businesses Use An AEO Audit
The audit is the same process for everyone, but what you focus on changes with your business model.
| Business type | Prompts to start with | What the audit often shows | First fix to try |
|---|---|---|---|
| Local service business | "Best [service] in [town]" and "[service] near me" questions | Competitors with more reviews and directory listings get named | Clean up your Business Profile and earn reviews and local coverage |
| Software company | "Best tool for [job]" and "[you] vs [competitor]" questions | Comparison articles decide which tools get named | Earn a place in the comparisons the AI cites, and publish an honest comparison page |
| Online shop | "Best [product] for [use]" questions | Product facts or prices in answers are out of date | Update product pages and your Merchant Center information |
| Consultant or coach | "Who is the best [expert] for [problem]?" questions | The AI may name experts who have more third-party coverage | Write expert bylines and appear on podcasts and industry sites |
| Agency serving clients | The client's own buyer questions | Clients have no idea what AI says about them | Run the audit as the first step of the engagement and share the dated log |
I can't promise any of these fixes will change an answer, because nobody controls what a model says.
In my experience, the businesses that get named most often tend to have consistent facts and plenty of trusted third-party coverage.

How To Run An AEO Audit Without A Big Budget
You can run the core of the audit in an afternoon with a spreadsheet.
- Write 20 questions your customers ask before they buy, mixing best-of, comparison, problem and brand questions.
- Ask each question in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude and Google, using a fresh chat every time.
- Ask each question at least twice, because AI answers change from one chat to the next.
- Write down whether you were named, which competitors were named, which websites were cited and whether your facts were right.
- Ask your web person to check that OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot and Googlebot can reach your key pages.
- Read the first sentence of your ten most important pages and rewrite any that don't answer the question.
- Save the whole log with the date, and repeat it every month.
Google counts traffic from AI Overviews and AI Mode inside the "Web" search type of the Search Console Performance report, so your existing Search Console account already shows part of the picture.

When An AEO Audit Is Worth Getting Help With
DIY works well for a single business with a short list of services.
Help is worth it when you sell in several markets, when the competitor gap is large or when nobody on your team has time to run the prompts every month.
It's also worth it when the fix is coverage, because earning bylines, reviews and comparisons takes relationships as well as time.
My agency's free strategy session works like a free AEO audit conversation, because you go through your visibility with a strategist and leave with a plan.
The page lists what you get, which is a custom visibility plan, a clear AI visibility roadmap, your questions answered by an experienced strategist, a strategy built around your brand, a competitor gap analysis and a plan for traffic, mentions and leads.
It's a conversation and a plan, and it isn't an automated tool or a written report.

How Agencies Can Use AEO Audits With Clients
If you run an agency, the AEO audit is a natural first step for a client engagement.
The dated prompt log gives the client something concrete to look at in the first meeting.
It also sets the baseline you'll report against, which makes every later report more honest.
I'd keep three rules if I were packaging it for clients.
- Show the raw answers and the cited sources, not just a score you invented.
- Never promise a client that an AI will recommend them, because nobody can guarantee that.
- Re-run the same prompts on a schedule so the client sees the trend over time.
If you're building an AI-powered agency, my AI SEO training guide lists the skills I'd learn first.
How I Use AEO Audits On My Own Brand
I run this audit on my own brand and sites, and my AI agents handle most of the repetitive parts.
My Agent OS runs a crew of AI agents under one shared memory, so the prompts, the answers and the cited sources all land in one place.
At Goldie Agency, AI runs around 80% of our internal operations, and the same system I teach is what executes the work.
The audit tells my agents what to fix, and people still own the strategy and the final review.
The links side still matters for AI answers, and my guide to the best backlink building service explains how I'd judge a provider.
If you'd rather hire the whole job out, my breakdown of what an AI SEO optimization agency should do covers the six jobs to ask for.

My Verdict On AEO Audits For Business Owners
An AEO audit is the cheapest way to find out whether AI tools are sending your leads to competitors.
Start with the five leaks, fix crawler blocks and wrong facts first, and then work on answer-shaped pages and trusted coverage.
Nobody can guarantee what a model says, so judge the work by your dated log and your enquiries, not by promises.
If you want a second pair of eyes on your results, book a free SEO strategy session and leave with a plan for traffic, mentions and leads.

FAQ: AEO Audit For Business
What does an AEO audit check?
An AEO audit checks whether AI tools like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude and Google's AI Overviews name your business for real buyer questions.
It also records which websites they cite, whether your facts are right and whether the AI crawlers can reach your pages.
Why do AI tools recommend my competitors instead of me?
The most common reason is that your competitors appear on the comparison articles, review sites and directories the AI cites, and you don't.
Wrong or inconsistent facts, blocked crawlers and pages that don't answer the question are the other usual causes.
How long does an AEO audit take?
A first pass with 20 prompts takes an afternoon for most small businesses.
Larger brands with several services or markets should plan for a day or more.
Can I do an AEO audit myself?
Yes, because the core of it is a spreadsheet, a list of customer questions and the AI tools you already use.
Getting help makes sense when the competitor gap is large or when the fix needs third-party coverage.
Will an AEO audit guarantee that ChatGPT recommends my business?
No, because nobody can guarantee what a model says.
The audit shows you what the AI says today and what you can improve, and your dated log shows whether the work helped.
