A free SEO / GEO audit is a no-cost check of whether your business can be found in Google and whether AI tools like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google's AI Overviews mention you when buyers ask for a recommendation.

The money question is simple, because you want to know which fix brings in enquiries first, and that depends on what kind of business you run.

If you'd like a strategist to work that out with you, book a free strategy session and find out where your brand is missing from Google and AI.

This page explains what the audit is in plain English, then shows how five kinds of business actually use one.

I'll cover a local service business, an online shop, a software company, an agency and a creator or coach.

You'll also get the checklist, the free tools and the honest limits, so you don't pay for something you could do yourself.

What Is A Free SEO / GEO Audit, In Plain English?

Think of it as two health checks for your website done on the same afternoon.

The SEO check asks whether Google can reach your pages, understand them and rank them for what buyers search.

The GEO check asks whether AI answer engines can reach the same pages, describe your business correctly and see other trusted sites talking about you.

GEO stands for generative engine optimisation, and the name comes from a 2023 research paper titled "GEO: Generative Engine Optimization" on arXiv.

You do both checks together because they share the same foundations.

Google's own guide to AI features says a page only needs to be indexed and eligible to show a snippet to appear in AI Overviews and AI Mode, with no extra requirements.

So a business that is invisible in normal search usually has a harder time showing up in Google's AI answers too.

Why A Free SEO / GEO Audit Matters For Revenue

Buyers now ask an AI tool who to hire or what to buy, and they often act on the first few names they see.

If your business isn't in that answer, you never even get the chance to quote for the work.

If your business is in the answer but with the wrong price, the wrong location or an old service, you lose trust before the first call.

The audit tells you which of those problems you have, and that is worth knowing before you spend a penny on marketing.

I can't promise that fixing them brings a set number of leads, because nobody controls what an AI model says.

What I can tell you is that the fixes below are the ones I'd make first on my own sites.

The Checklist Every Business Uses

This is the same checklist for every business, and the use cases further down simply change the order.

Area SEO check GEO check
Access Google can crawl your important pages. OAI-SearchBot and PerplexityBot can reach the same pages.
Indexing Your money pages show as indexed in Search Console. Those pages can show a snippet, which Google says is the bar for its AI features.
Answers Each page targets one clear search. Each page answers the buyer's question in its first sentence.
Facts Your contact page and About page are clear. Your name, services, prices and locations match everywhere online.
Proof You have relevant backlinks from real sites. Trusted reviews, comparisons and articles mention your brand.
Markup Structured data passes the Rich Results Test. Structured data matches what visitors can see on the page.
Speed Pages pass Core Web Vitals on mobile. Key content sits in plain text, not inside images.
Measurement Search Console shows clicks and positions. Your buyer prompts show whether AI tools name or cite you.

How 5 Businesses Use A Free SEO / GEO Audit

Each use case below starts with the question that business actually asks, then shows which checks to run first.

Use case 1: A local service business that wants more calls

A plumber, dentist or accountant usually asks, "Why does ChatGPT name my competitor and not me?"

Start with the facts check, because local buyers care about location, opening hours, prices and services.

Make sure those facts say the same thing on your site, your Google Business Profile and every directory listing.

Google's AI features guide tells businesses to keep Business Profile information up to date, so this is a fix Google itself asks for.

Then run prompts like "best emergency plumber near Manchester" in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google, and note which businesses get named.

The competitors that appear will usually have more reviews and more mentions on local sites, which tells you where to focus next.

Use case 2: An online shop that wants product sales

An online shop usually asks, "Why do AI shopping answers recommend other stores?"

Start with indexing, because product pages often drop out of Google's index when stock changes or filters create duplicate URLs.

Use the URL Inspection tool in Google Search Console on your best-selling products.

Next, check that prices, sizes and delivery details sit in plain text on the page, because Google says to keep important content available as text.

Google's AI features guide also says to keep Merchant Center information up to date, so check your product feed matches your product pages.

Finally, test product prompts such as "best waterproof walking boots under £150" and see which stores the answers cite.

Use case 3: A software company that wants demos

A SaaS or B2B company usually asks, "Why don't AI tools include us in comparisons?"

Start with the proof check, because software buyers ask comparison questions and AI answers lean on comparison pages and reviews.

My strategy session page says AI platforms look for consistent signals across the wider web, such as trusted publications, expert articles, independent reviews and comparisons.

List every comparison and review page that mentions your competitors and not you, because that's your outreach list.

Then check your own pricing and feature pages open with a direct answer that an AI can quote accurately.

Use case 4: An agency that wants to win clients

An agency owner usually asks, "Can I use a free audit to open sales conversations?"

Yes, because a short, honest audit shows a prospect a real problem before you ask for money.

Run the eight-row checklist on the prospect's site and three of their competitors, and show them where the competitors appear in AI answers and they don't.

Keep it honest by showing the prompts you asked and the dates you asked them, because AI answers change.

Never promise the prospect a ranking or a mention in ChatGPT, because nobody can guarantee what a model says.

If you'd rather hand the heavy lifting to a team, my AI SEO optimization agency guide explains what that work involves.

Use case 5: A creator or coach who sells their expertise

A creator or coach usually asks, "Does AI know who I am and what I teach?"

Start with your entity, which simply means the clear, consistent picture of who you are online.

Ask ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini "who is [your name]?" and write down every wrong or missing fact.

Then fix your About page, your profile bios and your guest posts so they all tell the same story.

I publish on YouTube every day, which is why I treat video as part of my own footprint, and you can do the same.

Which Fix Makes You Money First?

Here is the order I'd use for each business, based on where the enquiry usually gets lost.

Business First fix Second fix Third fix
Local service business Make your facts match everywhere. Answer the buyer's question in the first sentence of each service page. Earn more reviews and local mentions.
Online shop Fix product pages that aren't indexed. Put prices and key details in plain text. Get your products onto trusted comparison and review pages.
Software company Get onto comparison and review pages. Rewrite pricing and feature pages to answer first. Check robots.txt lets the AI search crawlers in.
Agency Run the checklist on prospects to start conversations. Fix your own site first, so you practise what you sell. Track client prompts every month.
Creator or coach Fix the facts AI tools get wrong about you. Align your About page and bios. Publish expert articles and videos others can cite.

Every business shares one fix that comes before all of these, which is making sure crawlers aren't blocked.

OpenAI's crawler page recommends allowing OAI-SearchBot to appear in ChatGPT search, and Perplexity's crawler page recommends allowing PerplexityBot to appear in its results.

The Free Tools I'd Use

You don't need to buy software for a first audit.

  • Google Search Console is the tool Google calls "a free service offered by Google", and it shows queries, clicks, impressions, indexing and Core Web Vitals.
  • PageSpeed Insights lets you paste a URL, click Analyze and see Lighthouse audits for that page.
  • The Rich Results Test checks whether a page or code snippet supports rich results.
  • Bing Webmaster Tools has an AI Performance report, which Microsoft says shows how often your pages are cited in Copilot and AI summaries in Bing.
  • ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude and Google are your GEO test bench, because you simply ask them your buyer questions.

Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode traffic is counted in the "Web" search type inside the Search Console Performance report, so your AI clicks from Google already sit inside your normal numbers.

What A Free SEO / GEO Audit Costs, And What It Can't Do

The tools above cost nothing to start, and the main cost is your time.

The free strategy session costs nothing either, and it works like a free audit conversation with a visibility plan, a competitor gap analysis and a roadmap.

It isn't a written report or an automated audit tool, so go in with your questions ready.

If you want a full written audit later, Goldie Agency's Complete Site Audit page describes 30+ pages of insights covering technical health, content, keywords, backlinks and a competitor gap analysis.

That one is paid, and the work is scoped after a conversation, so I won't quote a price.

Here are the honest limits of any free audit.

  • A free audit can show you whether you're mentioned today, and it can't tell you exactly why a model picked someone else.
  • A free audit can find blockers you control, and it can't force Google or an AI tool to show you.
  • A free audit is a snapshot, so you need to repeat it to see whether your fixes changed anything.

Mistakes That Waste Your Audit

  • Business owners often check only Google and forget that buyers also ask ChatGPT and Perplexity.
  • Some people ask one prompt once, and that misses how much AI answers change between chats.
  • Many sites block AI search crawlers by accident through a firewall or CDN setting.
  • Some owners buy "AI schema" packages, even though Google says no special schema is needed for its AI features.
  • Lots of people fix ten things at once, so they never know which change actually helped.

My Verdict For Business Owners

A free SEO / GEO audit is worth doing before you spend anything on marketing, because it tells you whether the problem is access, facts, answers or proof.

Pick the use case that matches your business, fix the first item on its row, and re-run your prompts a month later.

If you want a strategist to go through it with you, book a free strategy session and leave with a plan for traffic, mentions and leads.
