StarNet AI agent is a free, open-source app that gives you a crew of real AI agents living inside a pixel-art space station on your own computer.
The question most business owners ask me is simple: is it a toy, or can it actually help my business?
My honest answer is that it's mostly fun right now, but there are some genuinely useful ways a business, an agency or a creator can use it.
In this post I'll explain what StarNet is, how to get it running, and seven practical use cases built from the features I actually saw when I tested it.
I won't promise you any income from it, because nobody can, and the tool doesn't promise that either.
What The StarNet AI Agent Is, In Plain English
StarNet is a local-first desktop harness for creating and running teams of AI agents.
It was made by Andrew Sims, and the code is on GitHub under the androoAGI account.
It's free and open source under the MIT License, and the version I tested was v0.13.1.
Instead of a chat window, you get a pixel-art space station where every agent has a body, a name and a level.
The README is clear that this isn't a simulation.
The agents make real model calls, use real tools and create real costs if you connect a paid model.
There's even a rule in the project that the interface must never show something the harness cannot prove.
So if the station says an agent is working, it really is working.
The Honest Business Case For StarNet
I want to start with the caveat, because I'd rather you trust me than get excited for nothing.
In my video I said, "I just think it's fun to play with. I don't think there's a massive amount of practical use cases."
I still stand by that.
What StarNet does well is make agent teams visible and enjoyable, which is surprisingly valuable for a business.
Most business owners never get past one chatbot because agents feel abstract and scary.
StarNet makes them feel like staff you can see, name, train and level up.
That alone can get a team actually using AI instead of ignoring it.
How To Set Up StarNet For Your Business
Setup is quick, and I'll keep it short here.
You either download the desktop app for Windows or macOS, or you run it from source with Node.js 18 or newer.
My full install walkthrough is in my StarNet GitHub setup guide.
Once it opens, you create your first agent in a few simple steps.
- Give the agent a name and choose its appearance.
- Pick a personality, such as composed, warm, blunt, dry, unhinged or upbeat.
- Choose "ask for approval" or "full power" for how much freedom it gets.
- Connect a brain by signing in with an account like Grok or by pasting an API key.
- Pick the model and a reasoning level from low, medium, high or max.
I signed in with Grok, chose Grok 4.6 because I prefer it over 4.7, and the agent woke up in one or two clicks.
It said, "I'm awake. Let's give the station a direction."
For a business, I'd strongly suggest you pick "ask for approval" for every agent at the start.
Which Brain Should A Business Connect?
This decision is mostly about cost and data.
| Brain option | Why a business might choose it |
|---|---|
| Grok sign-in | It's quick to connect if you already pay for Grok. |
| Claude CLI | It uses the Claude Code subscription you may already have. |
| Kimi sign-in | It's another subscription you can reuse. |
| ChatGPT through Codex | It reuses a ChatGPT account through the Codex sign-in. |
| OpenRouter key | One key gives you access to many models, paid per call. |
| Ollama | A local model runs free on your own machine, which keeps prompts private. |
The README warns that local models are smaller, slower and rougher on long tasks.
It also says an 8B model needs about 10 GB of graphics memory while it works, so check your hardware first.

7 Ways A Business Can Use The StarNet AI Agent
Each of these is built from a feature I saw on screen or that the README lists.
None of them comes with a promised result, so test each one on a small job first.
1. Build a small marketing crew
Open Crew and then Recruit, and you'll see roles like strategist, chief of staff, researcher and marketer.
A small business can summon a researcher and a marketer to stand next to its first agent.
Summon adds a new agent, while Deploy overwrites an existing agent's setup with the new role.
I'd use the researcher to gather facts and the marketer to draft ideas, then review everything myself.
2. Test ad copy with a ready-made skill
The skill market includes standard originals, and ad copy testing was one I spotted.
For an agency or an ecommerce brand, that's a quick way to generate and compare ad angles.
Some skills are built in, others install later, and the community can push updates.
3. Run an SEO helper agent
When my agent asked, "What made you want to set up an AI agent?", I told it SEO and gave it aiprofitboardroom.com.
That's a sensible first job for a creator or agency.
Give the agent web access, a clear purpose in its instructions and approval prompts turned on.
Then ask it for content ideas or page checks and review what comes back.
4. Plug in your everyday apps
The app catalog is labelled "add an ability".
It includes Gmail, Notion and GitHub, and most of them sign in directly while some need an API key.
That means an agent can work with the email, notes and code your business already uses.
Only connect the apps the agent truly needs for its job.
5. Handle real-world errands
This is the part that surprised me.
The app catalog has real-world categories, such as finding flights, which turns an agent into a travel helper.
It also lists sending physical letters, email and web search through Firecrawl.
For a busy founder, a travel-search agent or a letters agent is an easy, low-risk place to start.
6. Get a daily brief on one screen
Press the plus button at the top to add widgets.
You'll find connected apps, pinned widgets and a daily brief, and you choose what each one shows.
For an owner who wants a quick morning snapshot, that's a nice habit to build.
7. Use frameworks for harder thinking
The skill library holds frameworks, which are procedures the AI follows.
Examples include a decision framework for hard technical problems, a make-a-plan framework, humanising content and preparing for a hard conversation.
A manager could switch on the hard conversation framework before a tricky client call.
A content team could switch on humanising content so drafts sound less robotic.
You can enable or disable each framework, so keep only the ones each agent needs.
The Features That Keep Business Use Safe
The agent detail panel is where you protect your business.
- You can see and swap the model each agent uses.
- You can change the personality at any time.
- You can write the agent's purpose in its instructions.
- You can allow or remove access to the web and your local files.
- You can control approval prompts so the agent asks before it acts.
The panel also has Brief, Growth, History and Memories tabs.
The History tab is the one I'd check most, because it shows exactly what an agent has done.
The README adds a few features that matter for a business.
Spend, budgets and run history are saved on disk and shown as they are, so you can see the real cost.
Finished work lands in an OUTBOX as real files instead of being lost in a chat.
Night Shift lets agents keep working while you're away inside a leash you set, and every action is logged for review.
You can also wire agents to Telegram, Discord, Slack, Signal or Matrix, and attach MCP connectors for extra tools.
How It Feels To Use Every Day
The station view lets you zoom in and out, change the frame and go to full zoom.
Everything you run lives in four docks that you open, show all at once or drag around.
Your agents level up as you use them, which makes it feel like a Tamagotchi for an AI agent.
Chat shows each agent's online status and level, and the left-hand list switches between all your agents.
You can manage projects and sessions from the same place.
There's a slight delay when you send a message, so it isn't instant.
Tasks, quests, a work list, builds and a Systems menu all live in one system.
Who Should And Shouldn't Use StarNet In A Business
StarNet suits founders and small teams who want to learn agent teams in a way that feels fun.
It suits creators who want a visual agent setup they can show on camera.
It suits agencies that want to explore crew roles before building something more serious.
It isn't the tool I'd use for mission-critical client delivery yet, because it's an early release.

If you're thinking about selling AI services, start with how to start an AI agency.
One licensing point matters for agencies.
The MIT License covers the code, but the StarNet name, logo and artwork are owned by the creator and are not licensed for you to rebrand and sell.

My Final Take On StarNet For Business
StarNet is the most fun agent station I've tested, and it reminded me of the first time I tried Hermes Agent.
It feels like a much more fun version of Paperclip.
For a business, the real value is getting your team comfortable with agents through something they actually enjoy using.
Start small, keep approvals on, check the History tab, and only scale up once a crew earns your trust.

FAQ: StarNet AI Agent For Business
Can a business use the StarNet AI agent for real work?
Yes, a business can use it for light work.
StarNet agents make real model calls, use real tools and connect to apps like Gmail, Notion and GitHub.
It's still an early release, so I treat it as a fun way to run small jobs and learn agent teams.
How much does StarNet cost a business?
StarNet itself is free and open source under the MIT License.
The cost comes from the model you connect, whether that's a subscription you already pay for, a pay-per-call API key or a free local model through Ollama.
Is my business data safe in StarNet?
StarNet is local-first, and its README says station state, transcripts, memory and ledgers stay in your local workspace.
Your prompts do leave your machine when you use a cloud model, so match the model to the data.
Can I build a client service on StarNet?
The MIT License lets you use and modify the code commercially.
The StarNet name, logo and artwork are not licensed, so you can't rebrand and sell it as StarNet.
Is StarNet better than Paperclip for a team?
In my testing, StarNet felt like a much more fun version of Paperclip with a smoother setup.
Fun isn't the same as productive, so I still choose tools based on the job.
