Claude AI GEO is how a business gets named and cited when someone asks Claude, Anthropic's AI assistant, for a recommendation in its niche.

GEO means generative engine optimisation, and for a business it boils down to one question.

When a buyer asks Claude who to hire, which tool to buy or who the expert is, does your name come up?

If it doesn't, that recommendation is going to whoever Claude does name.

This page is written for business owners, so I'll show how Claude picks its sources and then what different kinds of business actually do to get cited.

I'll be straight with you from the start, because nobody can guarantee what Claude says.

What you can control is whether Claude can reach your pages and what the web says about you when it looks.

If you'd rather have my team look at your business first, book a free one-to-one GEO, AEO AI audit and get a custom game plan.

Claude AI GEO For Businesses At A Glance

This table shows the four things a business controls, and which kind of business gets most from each.

What you control What it means Who gains most
Access Claude's search and user bots can reach your pages, and they aren't hidden with noindex. Every business, because a blocked page can't be cited.
Proof Your own pages show real jobs, tests and results. Consultants, agencies and specialists who sell expertise.
Agreement Other sites describe you with the same facts. Local businesses and anyone listed in directories.
Tracking You ask Claude your buyers' questions every week and log the answers. Any business that wants to know if the work is paying off.

The rest of this page shows how each type of business puts those four into practice.

Why Claude Matters To A Business Now

Old search gave buyers ten blue links, and a business in position seven still got some calls.

AI answers usually give a short list of maybe one to three names, so there's no room for number seven.

That's true in Google's AI answers, and it's true when someone asks Claude for a recommendation.

The business that gets named wins the conversation before a competitor's website even loads.

How Claude Picks Its Sources

Claude is the AI assistant made by Anthropic, and it can answer from training data or from a live web search.

Anthropic's web search help article says Claude uses a search tool when a question benefits from current information.

It also says every web search response includes citations, so you can see which pages Claude used.

Anthropic explains elsewhere that its web search relies on search partners that index web content.

For a business, that means three practical things.

  • Your pages need to be indexed and reachable, or Claude's search can't find them.
  • Your pages need to say something specific, or there's nothing worth citing.
  • Other sites need to agree with what you say, because AI answers lean on what several sources say.

I explain the last point like five friends recommending the same restaurant, because when several good pages say the same name, the AI repeats it.

Anthropic doesn't publish ranking factors for Claude, so everything below is a sensible test rather than a formula.

The Crawler Check Every Business Should Do

This takes ten minutes and it's the first thing I'd ask any business to check.

Anthropic's help centre lists three bots and what each one does.

Bot What Anthropic says it does The business decision
ClaudeBot It collects web content that could contribute to training. Allowing or blocking it is a choice about training data.
Claude-User It fetches pages when someone asks Claude a question. Blocking it may reduce your visibility in user-directed search.
Claude-SearchBot It improves the quality of Claude's search results. Blocking it may reduce your visibility and accuracy in results.

Ask whoever manages your website to confirm that robots.txt doesn't block Claude-User or Claude-SearchBot.

Anthropic says the rules need adding for every subdomain, and that blocking its IP addresses may not work reliably.

Also ask them to check your main pages for a noindex tag, because Anthropic says noindex keeps a page out of Claude's web search results.

Use Case 1: A Local Service Business

A dentist, plumber or accountant can do this without any technical team.

Start by listing the questions customers ask before they book, such as "who's the best emergency plumber near me" or "which accountant handles small online shops".

Publish one helpful page per question on your own site, with the answer in the first two lines and a real job as the example.

Then make sure your business name, services and location are identical on every directory and partner site that lists you.

In my GEO examples video, the AI Overview for "best HARO agency" lists five suppliers and links Goldie Agency first.

That's Google rather than Claude, but it shows a normal service business can be the name an AI answer gives.

Use Case 2: An Agency Selling AI Visibility

Agencies can turn Claude AI GEO into a clear monthly service for clients.

The first month is the baseline, where you ask Claude the client's buyer questions and log who it names and cites.

The next months are fixes, covering crawler access, case-study pages and accurate third-party mentions.

Every month ends with the same questions asked again, so the client sees a dated before-and-after log.

The one thing an agency must never do is promise a client that Claude will name them.

Nobody can guarantee that, and saying otherwise is a red flag any buyer should run from.

Use Case 3: A Consultant Or Expert

If you sell expertise, you want Claude to describe you as the expert in your field.

The way to earn that description is to publish your real work.

When I searched "best geo expert", Google's AI Overview named me first and described me as known for documenting GEO experiments and public testing.

That description came from pages that document my actual tests, which is exactly what a consultant can copy.

Publish one page per real project, explain what you did and what happened, and describe your specialism in the same words every time.

Use Case 4: A Creator, Course Or Community

This is my own main business, so I'll share how I approach it.

I publish a lot of content across several sites and platforms, each with a different angle, all pointing to the same answer.

That's how I can show up two to four times on page one for one search, and my subreddit, AI SEO Insider, ranks on page one too.

I also publish "best of" lists that name my own offer first, and I always disclose that it's my own list.

In my examples, the AI answer for "who is the best Hermes AI SEO expert" recommends me and cites my content across several platforms.

Here's a second video where I show how I rank inside Google's AI Mode, which uses the same groundwork.

Use Case 5: A Software Or Product Brand

Product brands get recommended on comparison and how-to questions.

Publish honest comparison pages with a verdict in the first two lines and a table straight after the intro.

Publish how-to guides built on real setups, including what went wrong.

Make sure review sites and partner pages list your product with correct, current facts.

Then ask Claude your buyers' comparison questions every week and log which pages it cites.

Be First When Something New Happens

My third GEO move is to be first, which means publishing within 24 hours of a topic appearing.

When Jev AI dropped, I published on "Jev architecture" and "Jev waitlist" that same weekend.

For a business, the new topic might be a regulation change, a product launch or a seasonal problem your customers suddenly have.

When Claude searches for something new, a good early page is often one of the few answers it can find.

Google's 1 October 2026 update to its page on using generative AI content says it's "critical to manually factcheck and review all AI-generated content", so fast still has to mean accurate.

The 30-Minute Weekly Claude Check

Here's the routine I'd give any business owner, because it fits into one coffee break.

  1. Open Claude, turn on web search and ask your ten most important buyer questions in fresh chats.
  2. Note whether your business is named, and in what position.
  3. Note which pages Claude cites, including competitors and directories.
  4. Note anything Claude says about you that's wrong or out of date.
  5. Pick one fix for the week, such as a new case-study page or a corrected listing.

Answers can change between chats, so judge the trend over several weeks rather than one reply.

What My Own Screens Show

I'll be precise here, because honesty matters more than a good story.

My on-screen proof comes from Google's AI Overviews, Google's AI Mode and Perplexity, not from Claude.

When I ask AI Mode for the best GEO experts to follow in 2026, it lists me first and links to my sites, and Perplexity also lists me among GEO experts.

One of my sites went from zero to more than 1,300 Google clicks a day.

I share those results as proof that the groundwork can work, not as a claim about what Claude says about me or will say about you.

Honest Limits For Business Owners

  • Nobody can guarantee what Claude says, and anyone promising it is overselling.
  • Anthropic doesn't publish ranking factors, so treat each change as a test.
  • Training data changes slowly, so some improvements only show up with future model releases.
  • Wrong facts about you on other sites can be repeated, so fix them where they live.
  • Claude is one assistant among several, so this work should help you in Google's AI answers too.

Two Ways To Get Help

The first is the free strategy session, which I call a free one-to-one GEO, AEO AI audit.

It's a call rather than a written report, and my team looks at your site, your competitors and your nearest keywords.

The second is the AI Profit Boardroom, where you get my Agent OS, my SEO skill and checklist and the AI SEO automation section.

Members also get four coaching calls a week and a member map, with 3,400+ members.
