Generative engine optimization vs AIO confuses a lot of business owners, because AIO can mean "AI optimisation" or it can mean Google AI Overviews.

If an agency sells you AIO as AI optimisation, you're buying GEO under another name, and if it sells you AIO as AI Overviews work, you're buying one slice of GEO for one Google feature.

I use both ideas in my own business, because my pages show up inside Google's AI Overviews and get named in other AI tools, and the work behind both is the same.

Below you'll get the plain-English difference, what a good service should include for each meaning and the questions I'd ask before paying anyone.

GEO vs AIO For A Business, In One Table

This is the comparison through the eyes of someone deciding what to buy.

Question a business asks GEO AIO meaning "AI optimisation" AIO meaning "AI Overviews"
What am I paying for? Getting named or cited in AI answers across tools. Much the same thing, under a different label. Getting shown inside Google's AI Overviews.
Which tools does it cover? Google AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Claude. Usually the same set, depending on the agency. One Google feature.
Is there an official rulebook? No single owner, though the term comes from a 2023 research paper. No, it's an industry label. Yes, Google's AI features documentation.
Does it need special files or schema? No special files are needed for Google's AI features. Same answer. Google says no AI text files and no special schema.
Can anyone guarantee it? No. No. No.

If a proposal can't tell you which column it's in, ask before you sign anything.

What GEO Means

GEO stands for generative engine optimisation.

It comes from a 2023 research paper called GEO: Generative Engine Optimization, by a team from Princeton University, IIT Delhi and two independent researchers.

In plain words, GEO is getting your business named when someone asks Google AI, Gemini or ChatGPT who to use.

For a business, that means being recommended at the exact moment a buyer is deciding.

What AIO Means, Both Ways

When people say AIO to mean AI optimisation, they're talking about the broad job of showing up in AI search tools and assistants.

That's practically the same as GEO, and I wouldn't pay a premium for the different name.

When people say AIO to mean AI Overviews, they're talking about Google's AI-written summary at the top of some searches.

That's a narrower job, focused on one Google feature.

Neither use is wrong, but the two lead to very different scopes of work, so the label alone tells you nothing.

What Google Says About AI Overviews

For the AI Overviews meaning, there's an official source, which is Google's AI features and your website page.

It says the best practices for SEO remain relevant, and there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode.

A page has to be indexed and eligible to show in Google Search with a snippet to be a supporting link.

Google says you don't need new machine-readable files, AI text files or special schema.org markup.

It also says AI Overviews only appear when Google's systems think they add something, so they often don't show at all.

For a business, that means any "AIO package" built around secret files or special markup for Google is selling something Google says you don't need.

How I Use Both In My Own Business

I don't run separate projects for GEO and AIO.

I run one approach that I call the answer engine, and it covers Google's AI Overviews and every other AI tool at the same time.

Be the source

Every page I publish has a real case study, meaning something I tested and a real result.

The AI can't write about a test only you ran, so the page becomes the one it has to cite.

Be everywhere

I run multiple websites, each with a different angle, all pointing to the same answer.

That's how I can show up two to four times on page one for one search, and my subreddit, AI SEO Insider, ranks on page one too.

Be first

I publish within 24 hours of a topic appearing, like "Jev architecture" and "Jev waitlist" the weekend Jev AI dropped.

Why one approach covers both

The AI reads the pages that rank and sums up what they say.

I explain it like five friends recommending the same restaurant, because if five good pages agree on a name, the AI repeats it.

That's true whether the AI is Google's AI Overviews or another assistant.

Proof From My Own Business

In my GEO video, the AI Overview for "best HARO agency" lists five suppliers and links Goldie Agency first.

Goldie Agency also ranks first organically for that search, and it's a normal service business.

The same approach can work for a dentist, a plumber or an accountant.

Google's AI Overview for "best geo expert" names me first and cites several of my pages.

For "best AI SEO community", my AI Profit Boardroom ranks first and my free community second, in an article that was three days old when I checked.

In my latest video, AI Mode lists me first for the best GEO experts to follow in 2026, and I show that AI Mode does send traffic.

One of my sites went from zero to about 1,300 Google clicks a day, with over 9,600 impressions inside Google's AI features on one day.

These are my own numbers from my own screens, one of my sites flopped, and I'd never promise them to anyone.

What A Good GEO Or AIO Service Should Include

Whatever it's called, here's what I'd expect a proper service to cover.

Part of the service Why it matters
A check that your key pages are indexed and snippet-eligible Google says that's the requirement for AI Overviews and AI Mode.
A baseline of AI answers for your buyer questions You can't see progress without knowing who the AI names today.
Real case studies on your key pages The AI needs something original to cite.
Consistent business facts across other sites The AI looks for agreement between sources.
Coverage beyond Google ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Claude matter to buyers too.
A human fact-check of every page Google's 1 October 2026 guidance calls manual review of AI content critical.
Honest reporting Google counts AI Overviews traffic inside the normal Search Console "Web" totals, so there's no separate report.

That last row matters, because anyone claiming a precise "AIO traffic" number from Search Console needs to explain where it came from.

The Questions I'd Ask Before Paying

  • I'd ask which meaning of AIO the proposal uses.
  • I'd ask which AI tools are included, and whether it's only Google.
  • I'd ask how they'll measure mentions and citations each week.
  • I'd ask where my case studies will come from, because invented proof breaks the method.
  • I'd ask how AI-written drafts get fact-checked, given Google's page on using generative AI content.
  • I'd walk away from anyone who guarantees a place in AI Overviews or ChatGPT.

Which One Should A Business Focus On?

Your business Where I'd focus Why
A local service business AI Overviews first, then other tools. AI Overviews sit inside Google Search, and Google says Business Profile details should be up to date.
An online store AI Overviews and AI Mode first. Google lists up-to-date Merchant Center information as a best practice.
A consultant or personal brand Full GEO across tools. "Best [topic] expert" answers depend on what many pages and platforms say about you.
An agency Full GEO across tools. Buyers ask several AI tools who the best agency is, so one engine isn't enough.

That's my rule of thumb, and the free session is where you'd test it against your own data.

The Low-Cost Way To Start

In my latest video I show a free workflow that covers both meanings.

I export Google Search Console data to a CSV and give it to Hermes Agent, which is free and open source.

I ask it to analyse what's working and suggest topics to rank inside AI search engines, then it builds a report on my best pages.

I give it my SEO skill, a roughly 100-point checklist that writes from a case-study angle, and every draft gets a human fact-check before it goes live.

Google and the AI engines don't report AI traffic well yet, so I treat Google's organic data as the best proxy.

Two Ways To Get Help

The first is the free AEO SEO strategy session, which I call a free one-to-one GEO, AEO AI audit.

It's a call rather than a written report, and my team gives you a custom game plan for Google and AI search.

The second is the AI Profit Boardroom, with my Agent OS, a search OS that finds GEO keywords from your own Search Console data, my SEO skill, a 30-day roadmap, four coaching calls a week and 3,400+ members.

My Verdict For Business Owners

Don't pay for a label, pay for the work.

If AIO means AI optimisation, it's GEO, and if it means AI Overviews, it's part of GEO that Google says needs nothing beyond good SEO.

Buy one approach that covers both, insist on real proof and honest reporting, and ignore anyone who promises a guaranteed AI mention.

FAQ: Generative Engine Optimization vs AIO For Business

Is generative engine optimization vs AIO a real difference for my business?

Only if AIO means Google AI Overviews, in which case it's a narrower slice of GEO for one Google feature.

If AIO means AI optimisation, it's essentially GEO under another name.

What should an AIO service include?

It should check that your pages are indexed and snippet-eligible, record a baseline of AI answers, add real case studies, keep your business facts consistent and fact-check every page.

It should also say clearly which AI tools it covers.

Do I need to pay for special AI Overviews files or schema?

No, Google says you don't need AI text files, new machine-readable files or special schema.org markup for AI Overviews or AI Mode.

The usual SEO best practices apply.

Can an agency guarantee my business appears in AI Overviews?

No, nobody can guarantee it.

Google also says AI Overviews only appear when its systems think they add something, so they often don't show at all.

How do I know if AI Overviews are sending my business traffic?

Google counts AI Overviews traffic inside the normal Search Console Performance report under the Web search type.

There's no separate AI Overviews report, so a weekly log of who the AI names helps fill the gap.

Is the free strategy session a written report?

No, it's a free one-to-one call rather than a written report.

My team looks at your site, your competitors and the keywords you're closest to winning, then gives you a custom game plan.
