Dessa AI is Block's new conversation model, and it was trained only on recordings of human speech, so it hears and answers with tone, timing and emotion instead of flat text.
Block is the company behind Square and Cash App, and a small research lab inside it built Dessa from scratch with no text and no pretrained models.
It's a full-duplex speech-to-speech model, which means it listens and talks at the same time, like a person on the phone.
Block's page says it runs locally on a MacBook Pro M4 Max or better, and on 24 October 2026 it showed Download and Join the waitlist buttons with launch links marked as coming soon.
I haven't used Dessa yet, so I'm not going to pretend I've made money with it.
What I can do is explain what it is, how to get in, and the six business uses I'd test first, based on what Block has actually shown.
I don't have a Dessa video yet, so here's my video on Hermes voice agents, which shows how I already use voice to get real work done.
Dessa AI In One Table
Here's the quick version for busy business owners who want the facts before the ideas.
| Question | The answer from Block's page |
|---|---|
| What is it? | It's a full-duplex speech-to-speech model, so it takes audio in and gives audio out. |
| Who built it? | A very small research lab at Block built it, and the lab reports directly to Jack Dorsey. |
| What makes it different? | Block says it was trained only on human conversation, with no text and no pretrained models. |
| What can it pick up on? | Block says it natively hears and speaks emotion, sarcasm, laughter and sighs. |
| Where does it run? | The page says it runs locally on a MacBook Pro M4 Max or better. |
| Can I use it now? | You can listen to the demos now, while the download and waitlist links are marked as coming soon. |
| What does it cost? | Block hasn't published a price, a plan or an API. |
The last two rows decide everything for a business, because you can't sell something you can't switch on yet.

What Dessa AI Is, In Plain English
Think about the last time you rang a company and talked to a robot voice.
It probably waited for you to stop talking, paused, and then answered in a tone that didn't match how you felt.
That happens because most voice AI turns your voice into text, thinks in text and reads text back to you.
Block's page argues that this throws away a huge amount of information that text alone can't carry.
Dessa skips the text step completely, because the audio goes in and the audio comes out.
It learned from real conversations, so Block says it knows when to cut in and when to make the little "I'm with you" sounds people make on the phone.
Jack Dorsey summed up the thinking on X with "We believe voice is the most natural way to interact with intelligence".
That line also opens Block's own page, so it's the clearest statement of what the team is going for.
How To Get Access To Dessa AI
There are three routes on the page, and a business owner should know which one applies to them.
- You can listen to every demo recording on the page today, and Block says each one is a live, unsteered conversation.
- You can use the Download and Join the waitlist buttons once the launch links go live, which the page said were coming soon on 24 October 2026.
- You can apply for early access only if you're an AI safety researcher, because that form asks for an institutional email from a university, company or lab.
There's no sales team, enterprise plan or API page to contact yet.
So the smart move right now is to listen, learn and plan, not to promise anything to a client.
Six Ways A Business Could Use Dessa AI
These are my ideas, based on the behaviours Block shows in its demos.
None of them are proven yet, and I'll update my thinking once I can test the real thing.
1. Calls where the customer is upset
Block says Dessa hears frustration, sarcasm and a voice cracking with sadness.
That's exactly what goes missing when an angry customer talks to a normal voice bot.
The page even lists a sample called Refund among its extra recordings, which tells you the team has thought about this kind of call.
The catch is that Block doesn't mention tools, so Dessa on its own wouldn't look up an order or process anything.
2. Coaching and advice-style conversations
One of the headline demos is called Life advice, and Block says Dessa sounds genuinely empathetic in it.
Coaches, course creators and community owners could test it as a practice partner or a warm first point of contact.
I'd keep a human in charge of anything that's real advice, because the page makes no claims about accuracy.
3. Sales and interview role play
A full-duplex model that interrupts, laughs and reacts is a better practice partner than one that waits politely for you to finish.
I'd test it as a role-play partner for sales calls, client discovery calls or job interviews.
That's my idea rather than Block's, so treat it as something to try once the download opens.
4. Podcasts, characters and creator content
Block's demos show a huge range in intonation and speed, and Dessa picks its own voice and personality in each clip.
There's even a clip of Dessa talking to GPT-Live-1, which is ChatGPT Live, and both voices in it are AI-generated.
Block notes that the developer of GPT-Live-1 isn't affiliated with Block and hasn't reviewed or endorsed Dessa.
Creators who make AI-themed content could find that kind of conversation fascinating to build around.
5. Private conversations on your own machine
Block's page says Dessa runs locally on a MacBook Pro M4 Max or better.
Running locally could matter for businesses that don't want conversations leaving their own hardware.
I'd still read the licence and privacy terms when they're published, because the page doesn't cover how the downloaded model handles data.
6. A friendlier front end for an agent that does the work
This is the use case I'm most excited about.
My Hermes voice agents already open apps, build pages and remember what I tell them, but they don't hear tone.
A speech model like Dessa handling the conversation, with an agent like Hermes doing the jobs, would be a powerful combination.
Block hasn't said how developers will connect Dessa to other systems, so that's a future project rather than a recipe today.

The Business Use Cases At A Glance
This table puts the six ideas side by side with the honest catch for each one.
| Use case | Why Dessa AI could help | The catch today |
|---|---|---|
| Upset customer calls | Block says it hears frustration and sarcasm. | The page doesn't mention tools, so it can't act on an order. |
| Coaching conversations | Block says it sounds empathetic in the Life advice demo. | The page makes no accuracy claims, so a human should stay in charge. |
| Sales role play | It can interrupt and react like a real person. | This is my idea, and it needs testing once the download opens. |
| Creator content | The demos show a wide range of tone and speed. | The page doesn't say whether you can choose or design a voice. |
| Private local conversations | It runs locally on a MacBook Pro M4 Max or better. | The licence and data terms aren't published yet. |
| A voice front end for agents | It could make an agent feel natural to talk to. | Block hasn't published a way for developers to connect it. |
What Dessa AI Can't Do For A Business Yet
I want to be straight with you, because hype costs money.
The page has no price, so you can't work out margins on a service built around it.
There's no API listed, so you can't plug it into your phone system or your website.
There's no release date for the download, so you can't promise a launch date to a client.
The page doesn't say which languages Dessa speaks, and Block lists learning new languages as one of its open research questions.
Block also says it's inviting safety researchers in because a model that learned to talk from sound alone is new territory.
That's honest, and it's also a sign that this is early research, not a finished business product.

Why Block's Safety Point Matters For Businesses
Block gives three reasons for building Dessa, which are curiosity, better understanding between humans and AI, and safety.
The safety reason is the one business owners should care about.
Block's example is a person in serious pain while a voice AI has no idea and just keeps talking.
If your business ever puts a voice bot in front of customers, that's the exact failure that damages trust.
A model that can hear distress is a step toward bots that know when to slow down or hand over to a human.
How I'd Prepare My Business For Dessa AI
Here's the plan I'd follow this month, while the launch links are still coming.
- I'd listen to all six headline demos and the 15 extra samples on Block's page.
- I'd write down the three customer conversations in my business where tone matters most.
- I'd check whether my team has a MacBook Pro with an M4 Max or better for testing.
- I'd keep running my current voice agents for the jobs that need actions, not just talk.
- I'd revisit the page for the download and waitlist links, and test it the day they go live.
