Block Dessa is a speech-to-speech AI model from Block, the company behind Square, Cash App, Afterpay and TIDAL, and it learned to talk only by listening to human conversations.
A very small research lab inside Block built it, and that lab reports directly to Jack Dorsey.
The model listens and talks at the same time, and Block's page says it runs locally on a MacBook Pro M4 Max or better.
On 24 October 2026 the official page showed Download and Join the waitlist buttons, with the launch links marked as coming soon and no price listed.
I haven't used Dessa yet, so I'm going to stick to what Block has published and give you my honest read on what it means for business owners.
The big question most people are asking is why a payments company built a voice model at all, so that's where I'll start.
I don't have a Dessa video, so here's my video on Hermes Jarvis, the voice agent I already use to get work done by talking.
Block Dessa: The Business Owner's Summary
Here's what you need to know before you read the rest, in one table.

Why Would Block Build A Voice Model?
This is the question I kept seeing, so let's deal with it properly.
Block's own answer has nothing to do with payments, at least on the page.
It says the lab built Dessa out of curiosity, to improve understanding between humans and AI, and for safety.
The curiosity part is about whether a model could learn to talk the way babies do, without ever seeing a written word.
The understanding part is about how today's voice AI flattens what we say into text and can't keep up with human timing.
The safety part is about AI becoming more powerful while staying nearly deaf to the emotion in our voices.
My own read is that a company whose products talk to millions of customers has every reason to care about voice, but that's my opinion, not something Block says.
Block hasn't announced any plan to put Dessa inside Square, Cash App or anything else, and I won't pretend it has.
The Team Behind Block Dessa
The people behind a model tell you a lot about whether to take it seriously.
Block says the lab was founded by former members of Dessa, a deep learning startup from Toronto, and the model shares that name.
The lab says it has built deep learning models since 2012 and generative speech models for over eight years.
It describes itself as very small, and it says it chases frontier problems others ignore.
It reports directly to Jack Dorsey, who the page lists as Block's cofounder and chairman.
Ragavan Thurairatnam signs the page as Dessa lead, and the team list names six researchers plus current and former interns.
So this is a long-standing speech research team that happens to sit inside a payments company, rather than a payments team trying AI for the first time.
What Block Dessa Actually Does
Block describes Dessa as a true speech-to-speech model, which means audio goes in and audio comes out.
It was trained from scratch on human conversation, with no text and no pretrained models.
It's full-duplex, so it listens while it talks and knows when to jump in or make small sounds that show it's following you.
Block says it natively hears and speaks emotion, sarcasm, laughter, a frustrated sigh and a voice cracking with sadness.
The page says inference runs faster than real time, and that Block trained the model on only one NVIDIA GB200 NVL72.
Jack Dorsey said on X that Dessa is "small enough to run on your macbook", and the page names a MacBook Pro M4 Max or better.

What Block Dessa Means For Business Owners
Here's how I'd think about it if I ran a business that talks to customers every day.
Voice AI is about to feel less robotic
Most voice bots today convert speech to text, think in text and read text back.
That's why they pause, talk over you at the wrong moment and miss when you're annoyed.
Block's demos show a model that laughs at the right moment, gets louder when asked and finishes a sentence when someone forgets a word.
If models like this become available, the gap between a bot call and a human call will get a lot smaller.
Tone becomes something AI can act on
Block's whole argument is that how you say something carries meaning that text loses.
For a business, that means an AI that can tell the difference between a calm question and an angry one.
Block's page uses an example of someone in serious pain while a voice AI has no idea, which is exactly the moment a business wants a human to step in.
Talking still isn't the same as doing
Block's page doesn't mention tools, actions or integrations.
So Dessa, as described, wouldn't look up an order, book an appointment or update your CRM on its own.
My Hermes voice agents do those kinds of jobs today, but they don't hear tone the way Block says Dessa does.
The winning setup later will probably combine both, with a natural voice in front and an agent doing the work behind it.
Running locally could matter for privacy
Block's page says Dessa runs locally on a MacBook Pro M4 Max or better.
Local running could appeal to businesses that don't want conversations leaving their own hardware.
The page doesn't publish licence or data terms for the downloaded model yet, so I'd read those carefully once they arrive.
Block Dessa vs The Voice Tools Businesses Use Today
This table compares the approach, not tested results, because nobody outside Block has run Dessa publicly yet.
| Area | Today's typical business voice bot | Block Dessa, as Block describes it |
|---|---|---|
| How it hears you | It turns your speech into text first. | It takes your speech in as audio. |
| Turn-taking | It usually waits for you to finish. | It listens and talks at the same time. |
| Emotion | It mostly loses tone in the text step. | Block says it hears and speaks emotion natively. |
| Doing tasks | It can often be connected to tools by the vendor. | The page doesn't mention tools. |
| Where it runs | It usually runs in the vendor's cloud. | The page says it runs locally on a high-end MacBook Pro. |
| Can you buy it? | You can buy it today. | The launch links were marked as coming soon. |
What To Know Before You Join The Waitlist
If you sign up through Block's page, it's worth knowing what the privacy notice says.
The notice covers the Dessa website and says Block may collect details such as your name, email, device information and IP address.
It says Block may share information with its group companies, and it names Square, Cash App, Afterpay and TIDAL.
It also says Block doesn't sell your information to third parties.
That's normal for a big company, but I'd still read it before signing up with a work email.

How I'd Prepare My Business For Block Dessa
Here's the practical plan I'd follow while the launch links are still coming.
- I'd listen to the six headline demos and the 15 extra samples on Block's page.
- I'd list the customer conversations in my business where tone matters most.
- I'd keep using agents for the jobs that need actions, because Dessa doesn't do those on its own.
- I'd check whether my team has a MacBook Pro with an M4 Max chip or better for testing.
- I'd watch Block's posts on X, because the page promises more recordings there soon.
If you're just getting started with automation, my guide to the free Hermes Agent OS shows the agent side of the setup.
