REA Reverse Engineer Anything GitHub searches should land on one place, which is the official repo at github.com/morluto/rea.

REA is free and open source under the MIT licence, and you install it with npx rea-agents setup.

Please check that the repo owner is morluto before you run anything, and never download a zip installer from a lookalike repo, because the real project installs through npm.

REA stands for Reverse Engineer Anything, and it gives your AI agent the tools to inspect software and explain how a feature works.

I'm Julian Goldie, and I used it with Claude to rebuild my own booking calendar as a custom app in a couple of prompts.

This page explains what REA is first, and then it walks through seven ways a business owner, an agency or a creator could actually use it.

What Is REA Reverse Engineer Anything, In Plain English?

REA is a free tool that lets an AI agent look inside software and tell you how a feature works.

The project's own tagline is that it's one MCP for reverse engineering across binaries, applications and runtime behaviour.

MCP is simply the standard way an agent plugs into outside tools.

So REA is a plug-in for the agent you already use, not a new app you have to learn.

Here are the facts I checked on 13 October 2026.

Question Answer
Where is the official repo? It lives at github.com/morluto/rea.
What does it cost? It's free, because the code is MIT licensed.
How do you install it? You run npx rea-agents setup in your terminal.
How popular is it? It had over 190,000 GitHub stars at the time of writing, and that moves daily.
When was it created? The repo was created on 14 April 2026.
Where are the guides? The project site is rea.tools, with worked guides.

My video showed 181,000 stars when I recorded it, which tells you how quickly people are picking this up.

Why A Business Owner Should Care About REA

Most of us have looked at a tool and thought, "I wish I had my own version of that."

Until now you had two options.

You paid a developer to study it and rebuild it, or you carried on renting the tool forever.

REA gives you a third option.

Your agent studies how the feature works, shows you the evidence, and then builds a version for your own project.

Claude gave me an analogy that makes this simple.

It's like tasting a sauce at a restaurant and working out the recipe.

Claude's other analogy was watching someone's golf swing so you can learn the movement yourself.

You're not stealing the sauce or the golfer.

You're learning how it's done so you can make your own.

How To Get REA Running In Your Business

I'll keep this short, because the setup is short.

You need Node.js and npm on your computer, and the README lists Node.js 22.19 or newer, 24.11 or newer, or version 26 and above.

Then you run one command.

npx rea-agents setup

Setup asks which agents you use, shows you the changes it wants to make, and waits for you to approve them.

It adds REA's MCP server and matching workflow instructions to your agent, and it backs up your existing configuration first.

You restart your agent, and REA is ready.

Setup supports Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, Gemini CLI, Grok Build and other agents.

If someone on your team handles the tech, send them the official repo link and this section.

7 Ways A Business Could Use REA

I'm going to be straight about which of these I've done myself.

The first and the last are from my own test.

The rest come from what the README documents, and I've labelled them that way.

1. Rebuild a tool you rely on as your own custom app

This is the one I tested.

I gave Claude the REA GitHub link and a link to my own booking page for my free SEO strategy session.

I asked it whether it could create the system I had right there.

Claude had no back-end access, so it worked from the front end only.

It found the scheduling rules, such as appointments per slot, slot duration, slot interval and calendar type.

It found who on my sales team is on the calendar, and it worked out the calendar API.

Then it built my own custom scheduler and plugged it into the workspace in my Agent OS.

2. Understand a feature you admire before you build your own

This is the README's main example.

Its sample prompt is "Understand how search works in the Notes app, show me the evidence, and build a similar feature for my project."

You replace Notes with your target and the feature you want to understand.

For a business, that might be the onboarding flow in a tool you already pay for and are allowed to examine.

I haven't run this exact prompt myself.

3. Audit how your own website behaves

The README says REA can inspect websites and return page structure, scripts, network observations and requested screenshots.

That needs a Chrome-family browser.

I'd point it at your own site first, because you'll learn what your pages are really loading.

That's close to what my test did with my own booking page.

4. Map a client's existing funnel before you rebuild it

This is an agency idea rather than something the README spells out.

When a client hands you a funnel nobody documented, you need to know the rules before you move it.

With the client's permission, an agent with REA could trace those rules from the front end, the same way Claude did with mine.

You'd still check every finding with the client before you rely on it.

5. Debug an integration from a saved network capture

The README says REA reads saved network captures, including HAR files and Fiddler SAZ files.

It returns requests, responses and exposed payloads.

If one of your own integrations keeps failing, a capture plus an agent that can read it is a faster route than guessing.

I haven't tested this target.

6. Rescue old software your business depends on

Plenty of businesses run an old internal tool that nobody has the source code for.

The README lists native binaries, .NET assemblies and JavaScript or Electron apps among its targets, and software preservation is one of its stated uses.

Native binary work needs Hopper, Ghidra or IDA, which you supply yourself.

This is the heavy end of REA, and I did not test it.

7. Teach your team how something works

This one is easy to overlook.

As part of my test, Claude built a page explaining how reverse engineering works.

It laid out six steps, which were asking the question, getting the artefact, following the strings, decoding, watching the behaviour, and rebuilding and proving it.

An explainer like that is a training asset for your team, and I didn't have to write it.

What My Rebuilt Booking Calendar Can Actually Do

Here's the result of use case one in more detail, because a real example beats a list of ideas.

Feature in my scheduler What it does
Adjustable meeting length You choose how long each call runs.
Start grid You choose the grid that slot start times sit on.
Office hours You set when bookings are allowed.
Bookable window You set how far ahead people can book.
Earliest booking You set how soon the first bookable slot can be.
Seats per slot You set how many people can book the same slot.
Reset settings and clear all bookings You can wipe the settings or the bookings and start again.
Shareable booking link You get a link to send to prospects.
Booking flow A visitor picks a slot, enters their details and confirms, and you can see who has the slot.
Verify versus live It fetches the latest available appointments from my live calendar on GoHighLevel.

It took a couple of prompts.

I want to keep my own caveats in here.

I think we could improve the design, and I would change the UI.

I'm also not a technical person, which is exactly why this impressed me.

The full walkthrough is in my Reverse Engineer Anything guide.

How REA Does The Work

It helps to know what's happening so you can trust the output.

Your agent calls REA through MCP to inspect the target and trace the relevant code.

REA returns findings with their evidence.

Your agent uses those findings to ask follow-up questions, explain the behaviour, or write and test an implementation.

The README says results include the evidence and the limitations behind each conclusion.

That matters in a business, because you want to see why the agent believes something before you build on it.

One detail from my test shows how it works in practice.

Programs are written by people who name things in English, so a setting might be called something like "allow booking after".

The agent follows names like that to work out the rules.

What REA Can Look At

Target What you need Did I test it?
Websites You need a Chrome-family browser. I tested a front-end analysis of my own booking page with Claude.
JavaScript and Electron apps You need Node.js and npm only. I did not test this.
Saved network captures You need a HAR or Fiddler SAZ file. I did not test this.
.NET assemblies You need nothing extra. I did not test this.
Native binaries You need Hopper, Ghidra or IDA. I did not test this.
Android APKs and devices You need JADX and a JDK, or adb. I did not test this.
Firmware You need Binwalk or Unblob on Linux. I did not test this.

The README lists more targets, including Flutter apps, WASM files, EVM bytecode, SQLite databases, Go binaries, packet captures and process behaviour.

Several of them are Linux-only or need tools you supply yourself.

For most businesses, websites and JavaScript apps are where I'd start, because they need the least extra setup.

Real Examples From The REA Showcases

The project site has three case studies on its showcase page, and they show the technical end of what REA does.

DX-Ball reconstructs a sound-pan calculation from an old game.

Notion traces the Electron clipboard bridge, which is the path a copy and paste takes through the app.

TH04 recovers a PC-98 DOS game's bullet-ring calculation.

I want to be precise about the Notion one, because it traces a single clipboard feature and it isn't a clone of Notion.

What REA Costs And What It Doesn't Cover

REA itself is free.

You still need an AI agent, and that agent runs on a model you pay for or already have a plan for.

REA doesn't ship a model of its own, so the quality of the reasoning depends on the agent you connect.

Commercial tools such as IDA and Hopper need their own legal licences, and REA doesn't grant one.

On privacy, the README says REA analyses targets locally, your agent receives the tool results, and your model provider has its own data policy.

Check that policy before you point an agent at anything sensitive.

Use REA Responsibly In Your Business

This section is short, and it's the most important one on the page.

Use REA on things you own or are allowed to examine.

The README says REA is for lawful research, education, interoperability, software preservation, and analysis of software you own or are authorised to examine.

Learn how a feature works, and then build your own original version.

Don't copy someone else's code, brand or content.

I ran my test on my own booking page for exactly that reason.

If you're unsure whether you're allowed to examine something, ask before you start.

The Lookalike Repo Warning

Search results for REA GitHub include copycat pages that offer an "official free download" as a Windows zip file.

The real project isn't a zip download.

It installs through npm with npx rea-agents setup from github.com/morluto/rea.

Tell anyone on your team who installs it to check the owner name first.

If you'd like help working out where AI and SEO fit in your business, you can book a free SEO strategy session, which is the same booking page I used for this test. If you're further along and want to work with experienced operators, have a look at the SEO Elite Circle.

What REA Won't Do For Your Business

REA won't make product decisions for you.

It tells you how something works, and you still decide what to build.

It won't give you a polished design either, as my own scheduler shows.

It also won't replace judgement about what you're allowed to examine.

The README says REA changes quickly and ships frequent bug fixes, so somebody needs to keep it updated with npx rea-agents@latest setup.

I'd treat it as a fast way to understand and prototype, not a finished product factory.
