Yes, you can get a Hermes Agent OS free today, because Herald OS is a free, open-source (MIT) Hermes Agent OS that wraps a full desktop around Hermes Agent.

The question I care about is what a business owner, an agency or a creator actually does with it.

That's what this post is about.

I'll explain what Herald OS is, what's free and what can cost money, and then walk through seven ways I'd use it in a real business.

I'm not going to promise you any income from it, because a tool doesn't make money on its own.

What it does is take repetitive work off your plate, and that's where the value comes from.

What Is Herald OS, The Free Hermes Agent OS?

Herald OS describes itself as an agent-native operating system with Hermes Agent as the interface.

In plain words, you talk or type to Hermes, and it handles files, apps, routines and builds across your machine.

It was made by an independent developer called Luke The Dev, and it is not affiliated with Nous Research.

Nous Research makes Hermes Agent, and Herald OS sits on top of a normal Hermes install.

The code is MIT-licensed on GitHub, and the current status is alpha, version 0.1.

For the full product tour, read my Herald OS explainer.

What's Free For A Business, And What Can Cost Money

Every business owner asks me about cost first, so here it is straight.

Item Cost to your business
Herald OS software Free under the MIT licence.
Hermes Agent Free and open source.
The AI model Free if you choose a free or local model, otherwise you pay your provider.
Free voice engine Free, using on-device transcription and free Edge voices.
Live voice engine Opt-in, and the docs list it at $0.05 per minute on your own OpenAI key.

So the software is free for every business, whatever its size.

The model is the only line that can turn into a bill.

The Problem Herald OS Solves For Busy Owners

When I started using Hermes Agent around March and April, it lived in a terminal.

That's fine for a developer, but most business owners I coach won't touch a terminal.

They want to see their day, their tasks and their automations on one clean screen.

Herald OS gives them that screen, and I honestly think it looks nicer than Hermes Desktop.

7 Ways Businesses Use The Free Hermes Agent OS

These are the use cases I'd set up first, based on what I saw in my own install.

1. Agencies: one space per client

This is the one I'm most excited about.

In the AI Profit Boardroom, people constantly ask how to set up an agent OS when they run separate companies or clients.

Herald OS answers that with Spaces.

It ships with Ideas, Work and Personal, and you can add a new space for each client.

You can also set a default space, so the business you work on most opens first.

That keeps each client's chats and files apart, which matters when you're handling more than one account.

2. Owners: a morning dashboard that tells you what matters

The dashboard opens with a greeting like "Good morning, Julian. Your day already in motion."

It shows today's schedule from your scheduled tasks and a "here's what needs attention" list.

"Pick up where you left off" looks at the names of your recent documents, projects, chats and calendar events and suggests where to continue.

You can switch that feature off, and the docs say it reads names and dates, never the contents of your files.

For an owner who jumps between ten things a day, that one screen saves a lot of "where was I?" time.

3. Inbox triage on autopilot

Automations let you schedule jobs and switch them on and off.

I run a morning inbox summary, and it showed up in Herald OS straight away.

That's because automations sync across Herald OS, Hermes Desktop and my Agent OS, since they all share one Hermes.

For a business, that means the inbox work you've already automated keeps working whichever screen you use.

4. Daily recaps and learning routines

My other automations include a 6am to-do recap and a daily Japanese lesson.

A creator could swap that for a daily content-idea brief, and a consultant could swap it for a daily industry news summary.

The point is that the boring, repeatable job runs every morning without you asking.

5. Missions for bigger projects

Missions let you hand Hermes an active goal, such as building out a new website.

Hermes then plans it step by step.

For an agency, that's a starting point for client builds, though you should still check every step before anything goes live.

6. A client brief that Hermes remembers

The Memory page shows everything Hermes remembers about you.

That's useful for a business, because your brand, offers and preferences can live there.

It's also a warning, because I spotted my Telegram details in there while recording.

If you screen-share with clients, check Memory first.

7. Hands-free voice work

The Voice settings let you switch engines, change the speed, pick local voice or live voice, test it and read the voice commands.

It feels a bit like Jarvis when it's working.

The free voice engine costs nothing, so you can talk to Hermes while you're doing something else.

How To Set Up The Free Hermes Agent OS For Your Business

Here's the short version of the Mac setup, which is what I used.

  1. Install Hermes Agent with curl -fsSL https://hermes-agent.nousresearch.com/install.sh | bash, reload your shell and run hermes setup.
  2. Choose a free model provider during setup, which I explain in the next section.
  3. Download the Herald OS DMG for Apple Silicon from the releases page and drag it into Applications.
  4. Run xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine "/Applications/Herald OS.app" once, because the build isn't notarised yet.
  5. Open Herald OS, which takes over the screen, and use Cmd+Ctrl+F to toggle fullscreen and Cmd+Q to quit.
  6. Add one space per client and switch on your first automation.

You need macOS 13 or later on Apple Silicon.

If you'd rather use a spare office PC, the Herald OS Linux installer puts the whole OS on it, with Fedora underneath.

There are also routes for Arch, Omarchy, other Linux and a virtual machine.

I had Claude do my install, and it took about two minutes.

My operator walkthrough on Agent Operators covers every step in more detail.

Which Free Brain To Use For Each Business Job

The model is where the cost lives, so match the brain to the job.

Business job Free brain I'd try Why
Inbox summaries A free Nous Portal model such as Solar Mini 4 or Ling 3.1 Flash Summaries are easy to check and suit fast models.
Daily news and research briefs A free Nous Portal or OpenRouter model You get sources you can click and verify.
Sorting files and notes A local model through LM Studio Nothing leaves your machine and there's no meter.
Client-facing final copy A stronger paid model plus your own review Mistakes here cost trust.
Anything that sends, pays or deletes A human approval step No model should own an action you can't undo.

When I recorded my Solar Mini 4 video, the free Nous Portal list included Solar Mini 4, Nemotron, Laguna XS 2.1, Ling 3.1 Flash, Step 3.7 Flash, Ling 3.0 Flash and LongCat 2.0.

OpenRouter also lists free models today, including Laguna XS 2.1, LFM 2.5 2.6B, Gemma 4 and several Nemotron models.

Free models get rate limited, so keep a second one ready.

If you pick a Nous Portal model, choose the entry marked free, because some models appear as both free and paid.

My Solar Mini 4 Hermes post shows how businesses run that free model inside Hermes.

The Settings A Business Should Check First

Settings in Herald OS go deep, so here's what I'd check before using it for client work.

  • The auto-approve switch decides whether Hermes asks before sending messages, so leave it on ask for client accounts.
  • Activity history shows background work you may have forgotten, which is useful for an audit trail.
  • The number of background agents and where they run, including Docker, controls how much runs at once.
  • Usage shows tokens used, your plan and your token balance, so you can spot cost creep early.
  • Software access lets you add or remove Claude Code, Codex and LM Studio.
  • Plugins let you paste a GitHub link to add one, so check that repository before you add it.
  • The General tab covers full screen, default space, default projects folder, do not disturb, stay awake, screen saver, dictation and quit session.
  • Themes and colours let you match your brand.
  • Privacy, notifications, networks, storage and accessibility settings sit at the bottom.

The README also explains the permission tiers.

Read and act tools run straight away and are logged, mutate tools ask first, and destructive tools ask every time.

Locations like your SSH keys and keychains are always refused.

There's a notification bell sound as well, so turn on do not disturb before client calls.

Honest Limits Before You Bet Your Business On It

Herald OS is alpha software, so I wouldn't run anything critical on it without a backup plan.

The Connections section, which should link your tools and apps, did not work or sync for me.

The interface was cut off slightly at the top of my screen.

Files has recent, favourites, projects, downloads, shared and deleted views, and the sidebar is resizable, but it's all still early.

Free models can get rate limited during busy hours.

None of that stops me recommending it, but it should shape how you use it.

Herald OS vs Hermes Desktop vs My Agent OS For A Business

Option Cost Who it suits
Herald OS Free, MIT Owners who want a beautiful all-in-one screen and accept alpha rough edges.
Hermes Desktop Free Teams who want a more established Hermes app today.
My Agent OS Included in the AI Profit Boardroom Businesses that want my full build stack, Hermes profiles and coaching on how to use them.

Because all three share one Hermes, you can mix them.

I use Herald OS for a calm view of my day and my Agent OS when I'm building for the business.
