Generative engine optimization vs answer engine optimization is really a question of era: AEO is the older term for winning the direct answer box, and GEO is the newer term for getting your business named inside AI-written answers.
For a business owner or an agency, my verdict is to buy or sell them as one service, because the same pages win both and splitting them just doubles the invoice without doubling the result.
Answer engine optimisation took off when featured snippets and voice assistants started giving one answer instead of ten links.
Generative engine optimisation got its name from a 2023 research paper about AI search tools that write replies from many sources.
In 2026, most of the people selling either one are doing very similar work under a different label.

The Business View Of GEO vs AEO In One Table
This is the table I'd show a client who asks what they're actually paying for.
| Business question | Answer engine optimisation (AEO) | Generative engine optimisation (GEO) |
|---|---|---|
| What is it in one line? | It is getting your page chosen as the one direct answer. | It is getting your business named inside an AI-written answer. |
| Where does the customer see it? | They see it in featured snippets, People Also Ask boxes and spoken answers. | They see it in Google AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT and Perplexity. |
| How old is the idea? | It is the older term from the snippet and voice assistant era. | It is the newer term, named in a 2023 research paper. |
| What does the customer do next? | They often get the answer and may or may not click. | They get a short list of names and often check out one of them. |
| What earns the spot? | A clear, short answer right under the question earns it. | Real evidence and other sites agreeing about you earn it. |
| What should you report to the boss? | Report which questions you hold the answer box for. | Report how often you're named and cited across a fixed prompt list. |
| Should you buy it on its own? | No, because it works best as the base layer of one service. | No, because it builds on the same base layer. |
The pattern is simple, because AEO is the format and GEO is the trust.
You need both, and one team can deliver both.

The Two Terms In Plain Business English
Answer engine optimisation means shaping your pages so a search engine or assistant can lift them as the direct answer.
Think of a customer asking "how long does a boiler service take" and seeing one answer in a box above everything else.
Google describes those boxes in its featured snippets documentation as results where the descriptive snippet shows first.
Generative engine optimisation means making your business more likely to be named when an AI writes the answer.
Think of a customer asking "who's the best accountant for small online shops" and getting a written reply with two or three names in it.
In my GEO examples video, I put it like this: when someone asks Google AI, Gemini or ChatGPT a question, you want your business to be the name in the answer.
A Short History Your Clients Will Understand
Clients trust a service more when they understand where it came from, so here's the story in order.
| Era | What searchers saw | The term people used |
|---|---|---|
| Classic search | Searchers saw ten blue links and picked one. | People called the work SEO. |
| Snippet and voice era | Searchers saw one boxed answer or heard one spoken answer. | People started calling it answer engine optimisation. |
| AI search era | Searchers saw a written AI reply built from several sources. | Researchers named it generative engine optimisation in 2023. |
| Now | Searchers see AI answers inside normal Google results and in chat tools. | People use both terms, often for the same work. |
The GEO name comes from the paper GEO: Generative Engine Optimization by Pranjal Aggarwal and colleagues, first posted on arXiv on 16 November 2023 and accepted to KDD 2024.
The AEO name doesn't have a single agreed birthday that I can point you to, so I describe it as the snippet and voice assistant era term and leave it there.
The voice side was real, and Google still documents speakable structured data as a beta feature that lets Google Assistant read news sections aloud on smart speakers.
Why The Money Is Moving Toward GEO
The reason clients care about this now is that AI answers give out far fewer spots.
A featured snippet was one box, but the normal results still sat underneath it.
An AI answer often names only a few businesses, and the customer may never scroll past it.
That makes being one of the named businesses worth more than it used to be.
My favourite example for a service business is "best HARO agency".
In my GEO examples video, the AI Overview for that search lists five suppliers and links Goldie Agency first, and Goldie Agency also ranks first organically.
That's a normal service business, and the same approach can work for a dentist, a plumber or an accountant.

Where GEO And AEO Do The Same Work
Here's the part that saves clients money, because most of the work is shared.
Both need your pages crawlable, indexed and allowed to show a snippet.
Google's AI features and your website page says a page must be indexed and eligible to show in Search with a snippet to be a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode.
It also says there are no additional requirements, no special schema and no AI text files needed for those features.
Both need the question answered clearly in the first lines of the page.
Both need your business name, services and location described the same way everywhere.
Both need the content to be accurate, because a wrong fact can travel straight into an AI answer.

Where They Need Different Effort
There are a couple of places where a good service treats them differently.
AEO effort goes mostly into page format, such as short definitions, clean lists and tables under each question.
GEO effort goes mostly into evidence and coverage, such as case studies, statistics, cited sources and mentions on other sites.
The GEO paper backs this up, because its best methods were citing sources, adding quotations and adding statistics, and keyword stuffing didn't help.
The paper also found that the best method varies by subject, so a good provider tests rather than copying one formula.
How To Explain It To A Client In 60 Seconds
If you run an agency, this is the short script I'd use on a sales call.
- Ask the client for the one question their best customers type or say before they buy.
- Search it live in Google and ChatGPT while they watch.
- Point out the answer box, which is the AEO spot, and the names in the AI reply, which is the GEO spot.
- Explain that one service will go after both, because the same pages win both.
- Show them a real case study, such as one of mine, and say clearly that results aren't guaranteed.
The live search does most of the selling, because clients rarely know who the AI names for their own market.
What A Do-Both Service Looks Like Month By Month
This is how I'd lay out a joined-up service so the client can see the work.
| Month | Main work | Which job it serves |
|---|---|---|
| Month one | Build the buyer question list, log today's answers and fix crawl or snippet blocks. | Both jobs |
| Month two | Rewrite key pages answer-first and add case studies with real numbers. | AEO and GEO |
| Month three | Get consistent business facts and mentions onto other trusted sites. | GEO |
| Every month | Re-run the question list, fact-check new pages and report the changes. | Both jobs |
I've left prices out on purpose, because engagements vary and I won't guess at someone else's numbers.
Here's my Hermes GEO video, which shows how I find GEO topics from my own Search Console data for free.
In that video I export Search Console data to a CSV, give it to Hermes Agent and ask for keyword and topic ideas based on what's already working.
Hermes then builds a report showing things like clicks, brand share of clicks and the pages doing best.
That's a cheap way for an agency to find the first questions to go after for a client.

What To Report To A Client
Good reporting keeps clients, so here's what I'd track for each job.
| Metric | What it tells the client | Which job it belongs to |
|---|---|---|
| Answer boxes held | It shows which questions you own the direct answer for. | AEO |
| Times named in AI answers | It shows how often the AI recommends the business by name. | GEO |
| Times cited as a source | It shows how often the AI links to the business's pages. | GEO |
| Accuracy of the AI's description | It shows whether the AI describes the business correctly. | Both jobs |
| Clicks and impressions in Search Console | It shows real traffic, including AI features, under the "Web" search type. | Both jobs |
Google's AI features page confirms that traffic from AI Overviews and AI Mode is counted inside the normal Search Console performance report.
In my Hermes video I also note that the AI engines don't report AI traffic well yet, so the prompt log matters.
Red Flags When Buying Either Service
These are the warning signs I'd watch for, whichever label the provider uses.
- A provider who guarantees a spot in AI answers is promising something nobody controls.
- A provider who sells GEO and AEO as two separate retainers for the same pages is probably double-charging.
- A provider who pushes special AI files or secret markup is ignoring Google's own guidance.
- A provider who can't show you a real case study probably isn't testing anything.
- A provider who publishes AI drafts without a human check is ignoring Google's 1 October 2026 advice that it's "critical to manually factcheck" AI content.

FAQ: Generative Engine Optimization vs Answer Engine Optimization For Business
Is generative engine optimization the same as answer engine optimization?
Not quite, because AEO is the older term for winning direct answers and GEO is the newer term for being named in AI-written answers.
In practice the work overlaps heavily.
Should a business pay for GEO and AEO separately?
I wouldn't, because the same answer-first pages, case studies and consistent facts help with both.
One joined-up service usually makes more sense than two retainers.
How do I explain GEO and AEO to a client?
Tell them AEO is about being the one answer in a box or on a speaker, and GEO is about being one of the few names an AI recommends.
Then show them who the AI names today for their best buyer question.
Can anyone guarantee a business will appear in AI answers?
No, because nobody controls what an AI answer says.
Google also says indexing and serving aren't guaranteed even when a page meets every requirement.
Where did the term GEO come from?
It came from the paper "GEO: Generative Engine Optimization" by Pranjal Aggarwal and colleagues.
It was first posted on arXiv on 16 November 2023 and accepted to KDD 2024.
