Generative engine optimization vs SEO is a budget question for most business owners, and my answer is that you fund SEO first and GEO on top of it.

SEO earns you clicks from the search results, while GEO earns you a mention inside the AI answer that sits above them, and the AI mostly reads pages that already rank.

So you don't pick one, but you do decide how much of your time and money each one gets, and that depends on where your site is today.

Below you'll get the comparison table, what each one actually earns a business and three simple budget splits you can copy.

If you'd rather talk it through with my team, book a free AEO SEO strategy session and get a custom game plan for Google and AI search.

Generative Engine Optimization vs SEO For A Business

Here's the comparison through a business owner's eyes rather than a technician's.

Question a business asks SEO GEO
What do I get? Visitors who click through from the search results. Your name inside the answer that Google AI, ChatGPT or Gemini gives.
Who sees it? People who scroll the results and pick a link. People who read the AI answer and may never scroll.
How many businesses win? A full page of results, and position seven still gets some clicks. A short list of maybe one to three names.
What builds it? Useful pages, technical health and links. Several good pages that agree on you, plus real case studies.
How do I measure it? Clicks, impressions and positions in Search Console. Mentions, citations and how accurately the AI describes you.
Can anyone guarantee it? No, nobody controls rankings. No, nobody controls what an AI answer says.
Does it need the other one? No. Yes, because AI answers lean on the pages that rank.

That last row is why I tell people to stop treating them as rivals.

What SEO Earns A Business

SEO stands for search engine optimisation.

It's the work of getting your pages to show up when people search, and then getting them to click.

For a business, the payoff is traffic you don't pay for per click.

I've been doing SEO for over a decade, and the basics still decide whether a page gets seen.

The page has to be crawlable, indexed, useful and trusted by other sites.

What GEO Earns A Business

GEO stands for generative engine optimisation.

The name comes from a 2023 research paper called GEO: Generative Engine Optimization, written by a team from Princeton University, IIT Delhi and two independent researchers.

In plain words, GEO is the work of becoming the name in the answer when someone asks an AI tool a question.

For a business, the payoff is being recommended at the exact moment a buyer asks who to use.

That's a different kind of value from a click, because the AI is doing the recommending for you.

Why You Can't Buy GEO Without SEO

The AI reads the pages that rank and sums up what they say.

I explain it like five friends recommending the same restaurant.

If five good pages in the top ten all say the same name, the AI repeats that name.

Google's AI features and your website page makes the technical side clear.

A page has to be indexed and eligible to show in Google Search with a snippet before it can be a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode.

Google also says there are no extra requirements and no special optimisations needed for those features.

So when someone sells you GEO as a replacement for SEO, they're selling you the roof without the walls.

A Real Example Of Both Working Together

In my GEO video I show the AI Overview for "best HARO agency" listing five suppliers and linking Goldie Agency first.

Goldie Agency also ranks first in the organic results for that search.

That's a normal service business, and I think the same pattern can work for a dentist, a plumber or an accountant.

The SEO win and the GEO win came from the same set of pages.

In the same video, the AI Overview for "best AI SEO community" puts my AI Profit Boardroom first and my free community second.

That article was three days old when I checked it, which is my result and not a promise for yours.

The 3 Budget Splits I'd Use

This is the part business owners actually want, so here are three splits based on where your site is today.

They're my rules of thumb, not numbers from a study.

Stage Your site today Where most of the budget goes The GEO part
Split 1: Foundation New, or most key pages aren't indexed yet. SEO foundations, such as technical fixes, core service pages and first links. Write every new page around a real case study from day one.
Split 2: Growth Some pages rank on page one, but AI answers name competitors. A balance of both. Get several pages and platforms to agree on you for your top buyer questions.
Split 3: Recommendation You rank well, but you're missing from AI answers. GEO. Case studies, multi-platform coverage and publishing fast on new topics.

If you can't tell which stage you're in, that's exactly what the free session is for.

Split 1: The foundation stage

At this stage, almost every pound should go into SEO.

The AI can't cite a page that Google hasn't indexed, so GEO money is wasted until the basics are in place.

The one GEO habit worth starting now is writing every page from your own experience.

It costs nothing extra, and it means the page is ready for AI answers the day it starts ranking.

Split 2: The growth stage

At this stage, your ranking pages are already being read by the AI.

Now the question is what those pages say about you.

I'd spend the budget roughly evenly, with SEO pushing more pages onto page one and GEO making sure each page names you clearly.

Split 3: The recommendation stage

At this stage, rankings aren't your problem.

Your problem is that the pages around you don't agree that you're the answer.

This is where GEO spending pays off most, because you're fixing agreement and proof rather than rankings.

How To Measure The Return On Each One

SEO is easier to measure, because Google Search Console shows clicks, impressions and positions.

GEO is harder, and I'll be honest about that.

Google says traffic from AI Overviews and AI Mode is counted inside the normal Search Console data under the "Web" search type.

In my latest video I point out that Google and the AI engines don't report AI traffic well yet.

So I measure GEO with a simple weekly log beside Search Console.

What I track SEO or GEO What it tells the business
Clicks from search SEO How many visitors the pages bring in.
Impressions SEO How often the pages are seen in the results.
Named in the AI answer GEO Whether the AI recommends you for a buyer question.
Cited as a source GEO Whether your page is one the AI trusts.
Accuracy of the description GEO Whether the AI describes your business correctly.
Leads and enquiries Both Whether any of it turns into money.

One of my sites went from zero to about 1,300 Google clicks a day, and on one day it got over 9,600 impressions inside Google's AI features.

Those numbers are from my own screens, and one of my sites flopped, so I'd never promise them to anyone.

What A Business Should Do On Each Side

Here's a short plan for each layer that a small team can actually follow.

The SEO side

  • Make sure Google can crawl and index your key pages, and check it in Search Console.
  • Build one clear page per service or product, answering the buyer's question in the first two lines.
  • Link your pages to each other so readers and crawlers can find them.
  • Earn links and mentions from relevant sites in your industry.

The GEO side

  • Put a real case study on every key page, with a real result.
  • Keep your name, service and location described the same way everywhere.
  • Publish on more than one platform, each with a different angle pointing to the same answer.
  • Publish within 24 hours when something new happens in your niche.

I call those last three habits be the source, be everywhere and be first, and together they're my answer engine.

How I Run This In My Own Business

In my latest video I show the free workflow behind my own results.

I export Search Console data to a CSV, which is free, and hand it to Hermes Agent, which is free and open source.

I ask it to analyse what's actually working and give me keyword and topic ideas to rank inside AI search engines.

It builds a report with clicks, brand share of clicks, non-brand click-through rate and a verdict on my best pages.

Then I give it my SEO skill, which is roughly a 100-point checklist that writes from a case-study angle, and let it publish to my sites.

Every page still gets a human fact-check, because Google's guidance on generative AI content says it's "critical" to review AI content before publishing.

Questions To Ask Before You Pay For Either

If you're hiring help, these questions separate real work from hype.

  • I'd ask whether they'll check that my key pages are indexed and eligible for snippets before doing anything else.
  • I'd ask how they'll measure AI mentions and citations, and how often.
  • I'd ask where my case studies will come from, because invented proof breaks the whole method.
  • I'd ask how every AI-assisted page gets fact-checked by a human.
  • I'd walk away from anyone who guarantees what ChatGPT or Google's AI will say.

Two Ways To Get Help

The first way is the free AEO SEO strategy session, which I call a free one-to-one GEO, AEO AI audit.

It's a call, not a written report, and my team gives you a custom game plan to rank in Google and AI search.

The second way is the AI Profit Boardroom.

You get my Agent OS, a search OS that finds GEO keywords from your own Search Console data, and my SEO skill.

You also get the zip, a video tutorial, a 30-day roadmap, four coaching calls a week and a member map with 3,400+ members.

My Verdict For Business Owners

Fund SEO until your key pages are indexed and ranking, because that's the ticket into AI answers.

Then shift more of the budget to GEO, because being named in the answer is where the next wave of buyers will decide.

Move the split as your weekly log changes, and never pay anyone who promises a guaranteed AI mention.

FAQ: Generative Engine Optimization vs SEO For Business

Should a small business invest in generative engine optimization vs SEO?

A small business should invest in SEO first, because AI answers lean on the pages that already rank.

Once key pages are indexed and ranking, more of the budget can move to GEO.

What does GEO give a business that SEO doesn't?

GEO can get your business named inside the AI answer at the moment a buyer asks who to use.

SEO gives you a place in the list of results, which buyers may never scroll to if the AI answer satisfies them.

How should I split my budget between GEO and SEO?

It depends on your stage, with new sites putting most of the budget into SEO and well-ranking sites shifting more into GEO.

These are rules of thumb rather than a formula, so adjust them as your results change.

How do I know if GEO is working for my business?

Run the same buyer questions in AI tools every week and record whether you're named, cited and described accurately.

Then compare that log with clicks and leads from Search Console and your own records.

Can an agency guarantee my business will appear in AI answers?

No, nobody can guarantee what an AI answer will say.

A good agency will show you how it measures mentions and citations instead of promising results.

Is the free strategy session a written report?

No, it's a free one-to-one call rather than a written report.

My team looks at your site, your competitors and the keywords you're closest to winning, then gives you a custom game plan.
