A Hermes Agent bot is your Hermes Agent living inside a chat app such as Telegram, Slack, Discord or WhatsApp, so you and your team can message it the way you'd message a colleague.

Hermes Agent is the free, open-source AI agent from Nous Research, and its built-in messaging gateway is the piece that turns it into a bot.

Nothing extra is bought or bolted on, because the bot is the same agent with the same tools, memory and skills answering in a new place.

This post is for owners, agencies and creators, so I'll explain what it is first and then show how a business would actually use one.

Every platform, command and limit here comes from the official Hermes docs and from the help text on my own install, and I'll say clearly where my own experience starts and stops.

What A Hermes Agent Bot Is In Plain English

Think of Hermes as an employee who can use a computer.

It can search the web, read and write files, run commands, remember your preferences and do jobs on a schedule.

Normally you talk to that employee in a terminal or a desktop app.

A Hermes Agent bot gives that employee a phone number, in effect.

You open Telegram, type a request and the agent does the work on the machine where Hermes runs.

The official docs describe the gateway as a single background process that connects to all your configured platforms, handles sessions, runs cron jobs and delivers voice messages.

Hermes Agent is released under the MIT licence, so the software is free.

The model you connect is the part that can cost money, and you choose it yourself.

Where A Hermes Agent Bot Can Live

The docs list a long set of platforms, and most businesses already use one of them.

The list includes Telegram, Discord, Slack, WhatsApp, Signal, SMS, Email, Home Assistant, Mattermost, Matrix, DingTalk, Feishu/Lark, WeCom, Weixin, BlueBubbles for iMessage, QQ, Yuanbao, Microsoft Teams, LINE, ntfy and your browser.

Here's how I'd match the main ones to a business.

Platform Who it suits What the docs say about setup
Telegram Solo owners and small teams You create a free bot token with BotFather.
Slack Agencies and companies already in Slack It uses Socket Mode, so no public web address is needed.
Discord Communities and creator teams It answers in direct messages and replies in channels when mentioned.
WhatsApp Owners who live in WhatsApp The built-in bridge is unofficial, and a Business Cloud API route also exists.
Email Anyone who wants to forward work to the agent It uses standard IMAP and SMTP on a dedicated mailbox.
Signal Privacy-sensitive work It connects through the signal-cli daemon.
Microsoft Teams Corporate teams It is listed as a supported platform in the docs.

8 Ways A Business Uses A Hermes Agent Bot

I'm not going to invent income numbers for you.

What I can do is show you the jobs that map to real, documented features.

1. The morning brief

A scheduled job runs at a set time and sends the result to your chat.

The gateway runs the cron scheduler, and you choose a home channel with the /sethome command.

A job looks like this.

hermes cron create "0 7 * * *" "Send me a short brief of today's priorities" --deliver telegram

In my own setup, the routines I talk about most are an inbox summary at 7am, a niche check at noon and fresh content ideas every Monday.

2. Voice notes that become tasks

On Telegram you can send a voice memo instead of typing.

The docs say voice messages are transcribed automatically and passed to the agent as text.

The local transcription option uses faster-whisper on your own machine and needs no API key.

That suits an owner who thinks of things while walking.

3. Research that runs in the background

The /bg command starts a separate background session.

You type /bg followed by the job, and the chat stays free for other messages.

The docs say the result is sent back to the same chat when the task finishes.

Their own example is researching competitor pricing and summarising it in a table.

4. A shared team bot in a group

You can add the bot to a group so the whole team can ask it things.

With require_mention switched on, it only answers when someone tags it or replies to it.

Your allowlist still applies inside the group, so strangers can't trigger it.

5. Reports delivered as files

The gateway can send files as native attachments.

The docs list supported types including PDF, CSV, Word, Excel and PowerPoint files.

That means a weekly report can arrive in the chat as a real document rather than a wall of text.

6. Different brains for different channels

The docs describe per-channel overrides, where one gateway runs a different model and system prompt in each channel.

Their example is a cheap, fast model in a daily channel and a stronger model in a development channel.

An agency could use that to keep costs low on routine chatter.

7. Alerts from your own scripts

The hermes send command pipes text from any shell script to a platform Hermes is already configured for.

The help text says it needs no model call and no agent loop.

That makes it a simple way to send a "backup finished" or "form submitted" alert to the same chat as your bot.

8. An email address the agent answers

The email adapter lets people email the agent and get a reply in the same thread.

The docs say unknown email senders are ignored unless you explicitly enable pairing for email.

I'd treat that as an internal tool for you and your team, not a public support desk.

How To Set Up A Hermes Agent Bot On Telegram

The setup is short, and you can hand it to anyone comfortable with a terminal.

  1. You install Hermes Agent and connect a model, which is the step every later step depends on.
  2. You message @BotFather on Telegram, send /newbot, pick a name and a username ending in "bot", and copy the token.
  3. You message @userinfobot to get your numeric Telegram user ID.
  4. You run hermes gateway setup, choose Telegram and paste the token and your user ID.
  5. You run hermes gateway and send the bot a test message.
  6. You run hermes gateway install and hermes gateway start so it keeps running as a background service.
  7. You type /sethome in the chat where scheduled results should land.

If you'd rather not touch a terminal, the docs say the Messaging page in the dashboard and the desktop app has a "Create with QR" button for Telegram.

Keep the bot token secret, because anyone who has it can control the bot.

If it leaks, you revoke it with /revoke in BotFather.

My sister site has the full Telegram walkthrough with every command.

Giving Your Team Access Without Losing Control

This is the section an owner should read twice.

A Hermes bot isn't a toy chatbot, because it can run commands on the machine behind it.

That's why the gateway denies every unknown user by default.

You let people in using one of two methods.

  • You add their numeric user IDs to the allowlist for that platform.
  • You let them message the bot, receive a one-time pairing code and wait for you to approve it.

The approval command looks like this.

hermes pairing approve telegram XKGH5N7P

The docs say pairing codes expire after one hour.

You can then split people into admins and regular users.

Admins can run every slash command, and regular users can only run the commands you allow.

Anyone can type /whoami to see which tier they're in.

The agent itself has a safety layer too.

Hermes checks commands against a list of dangerous patterns, and the default mode asks you when it isn't sure.

You answer with /approve or /deny in the chat.

Scheduled jobs deny dangerous commands by default, because nobody is there to answer.

If something goes wrong, hermes pause is a global emergency stop for new work until you run hermes resume.

How The Bot Behaves In DMs And In Groups

In a direct message, the bot answers every message from an allowed user.

In a Telegram group, a setting called privacy mode decides what the bot can see.

Privacy mode is on by default, which means the bot only sees slash commands and replies to its own messages.

You turn it off in BotFather under Bot Settings and Group Privacy, and then you remove and re-add the bot.

Making the bot a group admin has the same effect.

On Discord, the docs say Hermes answers every direct message and only answers in server channels when it's mentioned.

They also say Hermes keeps each person's history separate inside a shared Discord channel by default.

That's a sensible default for a team, because two people asking different things don't end up in one confused thread.

What A Hermes Agent Bot Costs A Business

Here's the honest cost picture.

Cost line What you pay Notes
Hermes Agent Nothing It is open source under the MIT licence.
Telegram bot Nothing BotFather issues the token for free.
The model From nothing upwards Free Nous Portal models and local models cost nothing, and stronger hosted models bill per use.
Speech and web tools It depends on your providers The docs say a Nous Portal subscription bundles the model and tool providers.
An always-on machine A server bill, or nothing on your own machine A laptop bot stops when the laptop sleeps.

Free model lists change, so I wouldn't promise a client a workflow that depends on one free model.

If you want the bot online around the clock, you have three routes.

You can rent a small server, which I cover in my best Hermes Agent VPS post.

You can use Hermes Cloud, the managed host from Nous Research, which listed its Standard size at $0.51 a day when I checked on 11 October 2026.

You can pay a third-party host such as the one in my FlyHermes explainer.

Limits And Risks To Know Before You Rely On It

I'd rather you hear these from me than find them the hard way.

  • The built-in WhatsApp bridge is unofficial, and the docs warn of a small risk of account restrictions, so use a dedicated number.
  • A laptop-hosted Telegram bot drops messages sent while it was offline unless you change the cold-boot setting described in the docs.
  • One bot token can only be polled by one running gateway, so don't run the same bot on two machines.
  • The quality of the answers depends on the model you choose, because Hermes is the harness and not the brain.
  • A group bot needs privacy mode handled properly, or it will seem to ignore people.
  • I haven't published a recorded test of a client-facing Hermes bot, so treat the client ideas above as options to trial and not as proven results.

Bot Mode And Hermes Bots: The Other Meaning Of "Bot"

There's a second feature with a similar name, and it confuses people.

Hermes Bot Mode is a desktop plugin from Nous Research that turns your Hermes profiles into a roster of named bots.

Each bot has its own chat, its own memory, its own routines and its own model if you pin one.

Bots can message each other through the Agent Inbox, and you can pull one in with an @mention.

That's the feature I use most, because I rebuilt it as a Bots tab inside my own Agent OS.

My competitor watcher and my keyword bot sit side by side in one panel there.

In my recent Hermes video I also mention creating a Hermes bot from an active profile, which turns a profile I already use into a named bot on the roster.

My Hermes Agent Bot Mode post covers that feature on its own, and my switch story on the AI Profit Boardroom blog explains why I moved my team onto it.

The simple way to remember it is that a gateway bot is how you reach Hermes from your phone, and Bot Mode is how you organise many Hermes agents on your desktop.

The common jobs are a scheduled morning brief, voice-note capture, background research, a shared team bot, report files and alerts from scripts.

Each one maps to a documented gateway feature, such as cron delivery, voice transcription or the /bg command.

How much does a Hermes Agent bot cost to run?

Hermes Agent is free and open source, and a Telegram bot token is free.

The model is the main cost, and it can be zero with a free Nous Portal model or a local model.

An always-on bot also needs a machine that stays switched on.

Yes, your team can share one bot.

You add each person to the allowlist or approve them with a pairing code, and then you add the bot to a group.

Is it safe to give clients access to a Hermes bot?

You should be careful with that.
