Hermes Agent brew means installing Hermes Agent with Homebrew, and the command is brew install hermes-agent.
The formula is real and it works as a package, but Nous Research lists Homebrew as an unsupported install method, and the official route is curl -fsSL https://hermes-agent.nousresearch.com/install.sh | bash.
For a solo tinkerer that difference barely matters.
For a business that wants an agent running client work every day, it matters a lot, so this post explains both routes in plain words and tells you which one I'd roll out to a team.
I checked every fact here on 12 October 2026 against Homebrew's own listing, the formula file and the official Hermes docs.
What Hermes Agent Brew Actually Means
Homebrew is the free package manager most Mac users already have, and "brew" is the command you type to use it.
Hermes Agent is a free, open-source AI agent from Nous Research that can run commands, use tools, remember your business and work through chat apps.
Put the two together and you get one tidy install line.
brew install hermes-agent
Homebrew also has a second package for the desktop app.
brew install --cask hermes-desktop
Both packages exist, and I confirmed them with brew info, which only reads information and installs nothing.
The formula was at version 0.21.6 and the cask was at 0.21.2 when I looked.
Here is the part most blog posts skip.
The official Hermes platform support page has an "Unsupported" list, and "installs via brew" is on it.
Nous Research says unsupported methods may be broken now, may break more later and won't get fixes accepted.
So the Homebrew formula is a community package in Homebrew's catalogue, not an install path that Nous Research stands behind.
Who Makes It And What It Costs
Nous Research makes Hermes Agent, and the code is on GitHub under the MIT licence.
Homebrew's maintainers and contributors maintain the formula in Homebrew core.
Nothing in either install costs money.
| Piece | Who makes it | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| Hermes Agent | Nous Research | Free and open source |
| Homebrew | The Homebrew project | Free and open source |
The hermes-agent formula |
Homebrew core contributors | Free |
| The model you connect | Whichever provider you pick | Free or paid, depending on the model |
The model is the only line on that table that can send you a bill.
My best Hermes Agent setup ranking shows which brains I'd pair with each kind of install.

The Problem A Hermes Agent Brew Install Solves
People reach for Homebrew for three good reasons.
- It's one short command they already trust.
- It keeps every tool on the machine updated in one place.
- It avoids piping a script from the internet into a shell, which some IT policies forbid.
Those are real benefits, and I'm not going to pretend otherwise.
The cost is that you're running a build the makers don't support.
If an update breaks your agent on a Monday morning, the fix might come quickly or it might not.
That's a fine risk on a laptop you play with, and a poor risk on the machine that sends your client reports.
The Two Install Routes, Side By Side
| Question | Official script | Homebrew formula |
|---|---|---|
| What do I type? | curl -fsSL https://hermes-agent.nousresearch.com/install.sh | bash |
brew install hermes-agent |
| Does Nous Research support it? | Yes, it's Tier 1 on Apple Silicon Macs, Linux and WSL2. | No, brew installs are on the unsupported list. |
| How do I update? | hermes update |
brew upgrade hermes-agent |
| When do I get new versions? | When Nous Research publishes a release. | When Homebrew updates the formula. |
| Where is my data? | ~/.hermes |
~/.hermes |
| What do I need first? | Git, which comes with Apple's command line tools. | Homebrew itself. |
The data row is the one that should calm you down.
Both routes keep your agent's settings, memory and sessions in the same hidden folder in your home directory.
That means choosing wrong today isn't a disaster, because you can switch routes later and keep your data.
How A Solo Founder Would Use Hermes Agent Brew
Imagine you run a one-person business from a MacBook.
You already use Homebrew for everything, and you want to test Hermes this afternoon.
Brew is a reasonable choice here, as long as you know what you're accepting.
- Run
brew updateso Homebrew knows about the latest version. - Run
brew install hermes-agent. - Run
hermes setupand pick a model. - Type
hermesand give it a small real job, such as summarising a document.
If you later find yourself depending on the agent every day, I'd move to the official install.
The switch takes a few minutes, and I've laid it out further down.
How An Agency Would Roll It Out To A Team
An agency has a different problem, which is consistency.
Five people on five different builds means five different bugs.
Here is the rollout I'd use, and it's the same route my own machine runs.
- Choose the official script as the one standard for everyone.
- Have each person install Apple's command line tools with
xcode-select --install, so Git is present. - Have each person run the official install command.
- Have each person run
hermes setupand choose the company's standard model. - Have each person run
hermes doctorand send you the result. - Agree one update day a month, and run
hermes update --checkbefore it.
curl -fsSL https://hermes-agent.nousresearch.com/install.sh | bash
source ~/.zshrc
hermes setup
hermes doctor
You don't need to install Python or Node on anyone's machine for this.
The docs say the installer brings its own pinned Python, Node.js, ripgrep and FFmpeg, so everyone ends up on the same versions.
That sameness is the whole point for a team.
When I run hermes --version on my own Mac, it reports "Install method: git", which is how you can check that a teammate used the official route.

How A Creator Or Non-Technical Owner Would Do It
If you never want to see a terminal, skip both commands.
The official docs point Mac users to the Hermes Desktop package on the Hermes website.
You open the download, copy Hermes into Applications and sign in.
The docs say the bundled package already contains the agent, Python and its dependencies, so nothing gets built on first launch.
The Mac desktop installer is for Apple Silicon only, so an older Intel Mac can't use it.
My one-click Hermes setup walkthrough on Agent Operators covers the beginner route step by step.
Setting Up After The Install
Whichever route you used, the agent has no brain until you run the wizard.
hermes setup
The wizard covers the model, the messaging gateway, the tools and a few other settings.
For a business, three follow-up commands earn their keep.
| Command | Why a business cares |
|---|---|
hermes setup --portal |
It logs in to Nous Portal and picks a model in one step. |
hermes gateway setup |
It connects the agent to chat apps your team already uses. |
hermes backup |
It zips your configuration and data so a mistake isn't permanent. |
I'd run hermes backup before every update and before every change of install route.
My Hermes Agent backup walkthrough explains what's inside that zip and how to restore it.
Keeping It Updated Without Breaking Client Work
Updates are where the two routes really split.
On the official route, hermes update moves you from one published release to the next.
The docs say it follows the stable channel by default, so you don't get half-finished code.
On the Homebrew route, the command is different.
brew update
brew upgrade hermes-agent
A plain brew upgrade with no name upgrades every package on the machine at once.
That's a risk for a business, because your agent can change version on a day you didn't plan for.
If you stay on brew, upgrade Hermes by name and do it on a quiet day.
The docs also say hermes update doesn't rewrite files that a package manager owns, so don't expect it to update a brew build.
Switching From Brew To The Official Install
This is the move I'd make once Hermes becomes part of how you earn money.
- Run
hermes backupand note where the zip was saved. - Run
brew uninstall hermes-agent. - Run
which -a hermesand confirm nothing is left on your PATH. - Run the official install command.
- Run
source ~/.zshrc, thenhermes doctor.
hermes backup
brew uninstall hermes-agent
curl -fsSL https://hermes-agent.nousresearch.com/install.sh | bash
source ~/.zshrc
hermes doctor
Your data stays in ~/.hermes through that whole process.
I haven't run this exact switch myself, because my install has always been the official one, so the backup in step one is your safety net.
Risks And Limits A Business Should Know
I'd rather you hear these from me than find them the hard way.
- The Homebrew route is unsupported, so problems on it are yours to solve.
- The official support table lists Apple Silicon Macs only, and Intel Macs aren't in the top tier.
- The Homebrew formula lists no pre-built package for Intel Macs either.
- Typing
brew install hermesfails, because the formula's real name ishermes-agent. - Running two copies of Hermes on one machine causes confusing behaviour, so pick one route per machine.
- An agent that can run commands needs sensible limits, wherever it came from.
The fifth point catches people who install the cask, the formula and the official script on the same laptop.
One machine should have one Hermes.
Common Errors In Plain English
| What you see | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
hermes: command not found |
Your terminal hasn't picked up the new command yet. | Run source ~/.zshrc and try again. |
| "No available formula with the name hermes" | You used the short name. | Type brew install hermes-agent instead. |
| "API key not set" | The agent has no model connected. | Run hermes model and choose a provider. |
| An old version keeps running | Two copies are installed. | Run which -a hermes and remove one. |
| Settings look wrong after an update | The config needs migrating. | Run hermes config check, then hermes config migrate. |
If you're stuck, hermes doctor is the first thing to run on either route.
Linux Servers And Windows Laptops
Plenty of businesses run the agent on a small server so it works while the laptops are closed.
On Linux and WSL2 the same official script is a Tier 1 route.
Homebrew does run on Linux and the formula ships Linux packages, but I'd still pick the supported script on a server.
Windows has its own official PowerShell installer, which is iex (irm https://hermes-agent.nousresearch.com/install.ps1).

FAQ: Hermes Agent Brew
Is there a Homebrew formula for Hermes Agent?
Yes, the formula is called hermes-agent and it's in Homebrew core.
Nous Research lists brew installs as unsupported, so the official script is the route they stand behind.
Which Hermes Agent install should a business use?
I'd use the official script on every machine that does paid work.
Homebrew is fine on a personal test machine if you accept that fixes aren't guaranteed.
Is Hermes Agent free to install?
Yes, Hermes Agent is free and open source, and so is Homebrew.
The model you connect is the only part that can cost money.
Can non-technical staff install Hermes Agent?
Yes, because the Hermes Desktop package installs like a normal Mac app on Apple Silicon.
Nobody needs a terminal for that route.
Will I lose my agent's memory if I switch from brew to the official install?
Your data lives in ~/.hermes on both routes, so removing the brew build doesn't delete it.
Run hermes backup first anyway.
How do I keep a team's Hermes installs up to date?
On the official route, each person runs hermes update.
On the Homebrew route, they run brew upgrade hermes-agent and wait for Homebrew to publish each version.
