Startnet OS reviews are reviews of StarNet, a free, open-source AI agent harness, and for business use my quick verdict is 3.5 out of 5.

There's no separate company selling a "Startnet OS", because the name is a misspelling of StarNet with "OS" tagged on.

StarNet is a desktop app that runs your AI agents inside a pixel-art space station on your own computer.

It isn't an operating system you install instead of Windows or macOS, but it does manage a team of agents like an operating system would.

I've installed it and run real agents in it, so this page tells a business owner what it really is, what it costs, how to get the genuine download and whether it's worth your team's time.

If you'd rather talk to my team about getting your business found in Google and AI search, you can book a free SEO strategy session.

Quick Business Verdict And Scores

My quick verdict is 3.5 out of 5 for a business.

These scores are my own opinion from my own install of v0.13.1, so weigh them as one business owner's view.

What a business cares about My score Short reason
Fun and team buy-in 10/10 People actually enjoy opening it.
Setup effort 8/10 The first agent is quick once the app is running.
Use of existing subscriptions 8/10 It can plug into subscriptions you may already pay for.
Control over what agents touch 9/10 Web and file access are switches on every agent.
Team of agents 9/10 Roles like strategist, researcher and marketer are built in.
Responsiveness 6/10 There's a slight delay after every message.
Practical business value 5/10 I don't think there's a massive amount of practical use cases yet.
Readiness for client work 6/10 The README calls it an early release.
Cost 9/10 The software is free, and you pay only for the brain.
Overall 3.5/5 It's a great way to learn agents, not yet a client-delivery system.

If you want the deeper business case with use cases, my StarNet reviews post covers it.

What "Startnet OS" Actually Refers To

The official name is StarNet, and the README never calls it "StarNet OS".

"Startnet" is StarNet with an extra letter, which is an easy typo to make.

The "OS" part comes from how the tool gets talked about.

My own video about it, on my AI News Today podcast channel, is titled "NEW StarNet Agent OS is INSANE!"

I also run StarNet as a tab inside my own Agent OS, and that mixes the two names together.

So when someone on your team searches "Startnet OS", they're looking for StarNet.

Why The Name Matters For A Business

The name matters because you want your team installing the real thing.

StarNet's code is open source under the MIT License, and the README says anyone may fork and redistribute it, including commercially.

The README also says forks must use their own name, logo and artwork, and must not present themselves as StarNet.

That means the only official place to get it is the androoAGI GitHub account.

What to check The official answer
Who makes it Andrew Sims, who publishes as androoAGI on GitHub.
Where the code lives The androoAGI/starnet repo.
Where the desktop app lives The StarNet releases page.
What it costs Nothing, because it's MIT licensed.
The latest release v0.13.5, published on 16 October 2026.

The install guide says the public release pipeline requires signed builds, and it tells you to stop rather than bypass a warning if Windows or macOS flags the download.

That's a sensible rule for any business installing new software.

Is It Really An Operating System?

No, it isn't, and that matters when you're deciding where it fits.

The README describes StarNet as a local-first desktop harness, built from a JavaScript frontend, a local Node runtime called the sidecar and a Rust and Tauri desktop shell.

It runs on top of Windows or macOS, and Linux isn't a supported public target.

It does do the jobs people expect from an "agent OS", which is why the label sticks.

Agent OS job Does StarNet do it?
Run several agents at once Yes, the README says each gets its own workspace and permissions.
Remember things Yes, memory and transcripts persist on disk.
Control what agents can touch Yes, you can switch web and file access per agent.
Track spend Yes, the README says spend, budgets and run history are shown as they are.
Run work on a schedule The README lists cron schedules, which I didn't test.
Reach you away from your desk The README lists Telegram, Discord, Slack, Signal and Matrix, which I didn't test.

What It Costs To Run

The StarNet software costs nothing.

The real cost is the brain, because every agent run on a paid model creates a real bill.

In my video I explained StarNet can plug into existing subscriptions, including a Claude Code subscription through the Claude CLI, Kimi and Grok.

I signed in with Grok and ran my agents on Grok 4.6, because I actually prefer it to Grok 4.7.

The README also lists an OpenRouter key and sign-ins for supported Anthropic, OpenAI and Google accounts.

For a zero-bill route, the README shows a local model through Ollama, with qwen3:8b as its example.

It warns that local models are slower and rougher on long tasks, and an 8B model needs about 10 GB of graphics memory.

The Setup Reality For A Small Team

The desktop app is the easiest route for most teams on Windows or macOS.

Apple Silicon Macs need the aarch64 file, because the README says the x64 file runs under Rosetta 2.

Running from source needs Node.js 18 or newer and Git.

I ran it from source, and my install needed an npm ci even though the README says it runs without installing anything.

Mine runs as a local web app on port 8788.

The README says Windows is the most-tested platform and macOS has less real-world coverage, so test it on one machine before rolling it out.

My StarNet GitHub guide has the full install detail.

What A Business Can Do With It

You create an agent with a name, a look and a personality such as warm, dry, composed or unhinged.

You set it to "ask for approval" or "full power", and for business use I'd always start with ask for approval.

You write its instructions and purpose into the detail panel, which is where your brand, offer and audience go.

My agent asked me, "What made you want to set up an AI agent?", and I told it SEO and gave it aiprofitboardroom.com.

The app catalog, labelled "add an ability", connects Gmail, Notion and GitHub, and some apps need an API key.

It also has real-world abilities like finding flights, sending physical letters, email and web search through Firecrawl.

The skill market includes originals like ad copy testing and calendar scheduling.

The skill library has frameworks such as making a plan and humanising content, and you can switch each one on or off.

The Crew menu lets you recruit a strategist, chief of staff, researcher or marketer, deploy a role over an existing agent or summon a new one.

Widgets give you a daily brief and pinned information, and tasks, quests and builds sit in one system.

The History and Memories tabs show what each agent did and what it remembered, which helps you check its work.

Where It Falls Short For Work

My honest line from the video was, "I just think it's fun to play with. I don't think there's a massive amount of practical use cases."

Chat has a slight delay after every message, which slows quick back-and-forth work.

It's an early release, so I wouldn't push client deliverables through it yet.

A viewer was frustrated that they couldn't use it with Hermes Agent, which many businesses in my community already run.

The README says StarNet can import an existing Hermes or OpenClaw agent's persona, instructions, memory and model, and API keys must be re-entered.

The v0.13.5 release notes say agent-made skill changes now need a passing evaluation and your approval, which is a step towards business safety, although I haven't re-tested it.

StarNet Or A Full Agent OS?

If you came looking for an "OS" for your business agents, here's how I'd rank the options.

My own product is first on this list, so weigh that honestly.

Rank Name Best for
1 Agent OS (my own, inside the AI Profit Boardroom) Running real business jobs with Hermes, Claude and other agents under one shared memory.
2 StarNet Teaching a team how agents work in a fun, visual station.
3 Herald OS A free desktop-style interface built around Hermes Agent.

My Agent OS is the dashboard I use to run a crew of AI agents, and members install it from inside the AI Profit Boardroom.

I keep StarNet as a tab inside it, so my team gets the fun station without moving real work into an early release.

Herald OS is a free MIT project by Luke The Dev, and my Herald OS breakdown explains it.
