Open Design Motion is a free, open-source AI tool that turns a written idea into a finished motion design video, and I now use it to make short reels for my own brand.
It is the motion feature of Open Design, which shipped as release v0.25.0 on 15 October 2026 under the codename "OpenDesign Motion".
The Open Design team bills it as "The Open-Source Alternative to Claude Motion".
The code is on GitHub at nexu-io/open-design under the Apache-2.0 licence, so the tool costs you nothing.
Most business owners know they should post more video, and most of them stall because editing is slow and designers are expensive.
This page explains what Open Design Motion is, how to start, and the real ways a business, an agency or a creator can put it to work.

What Open Design Motion Actually Is
Open Design calls itself "the 1st collaborative AI design agent workspace", and it is local-first and open source.
Motion is the part of the workspace that makes videos.
Your AI agent writes the animation as HTML, CSS and GSAP code, and HyperFrames turns that code into an MP4.
HyperFrames is HeyGen's open-source, agent-native video framework, and Open Design builds it in as a first-class feature.
Because the video is code, you can change one word, one colour or one scene without rebuilding from nothing.
That is the reason it suits a business that needs lots of short videos on a tight budget.

The Problem It Solves For A Small Business
The old way to get a motion video was to brief a designer, wait, review, wait again and pay for every round.
Most small businesses just didn't bother, so their social feeds stayed full of static images.
The new way is to describe the video in one prompt and let an agent build it in the background.
When I tested it, my results were genuinely better than what my normal human team can do, and that is my own opinion from what I saw.
I'm not saying you should fire anyone.
I'm saying one person can now produce the first draft of a motion video in the time it takes to write the brief.
How To Get Started In Ten Minutes
The README recommends the desktop app as the fastest route, with no Node, no pnpm and no clone needed.
- On macOS, Apple Silicon or Intel, you download it from open-design.ai or GitHub Releases.
- On Windows x64, you download it from the same two places.
- On Linux, there is no prebuilt app in the official releases yet, so the README says to run it from source.
The README's run-from-source commands are these.
git clone https://github.com/nexu-io/open-design.git
cd open-design
corepack enable && pnpm install
pnpm tools-dev run web
After install, the app auto-detects the coding-agent CLIs already on your computer.
When I opened it, it found the agents and CLIs I already had, such as OpenCode and Hermes Agent.
You can switch between agents and CLIs such as Hermes Agent, Kimi CLI and Antigravity, and there is a local mode too.
You don't need a premium model like Opus 5.5 to get good results.
Inside OpenCode I showed free models such as LongCat, MiMo v2.6, Nemotron 3.5 Super, GLM-5.3 Flash and DeepSeek V4.1 Flash, which were all free in OpenCode when I recorded.
Then you go to Home, pick Motion Design, choose a template, write your prompt, and set the BPM and style.

7 Ways A Business Can Use Open Design Motion
These are practical use cases for the tool.
I've marked the ones I showed in my own video, and the rest are sensible uses of the same features rather than results I'm claiming.
1. A trailer for your brand or product
This is what I tested first.
I asked for a 20-second paper cutout story that worked as a trailer for Open Design, and it built the whole thing in the background.
A trailer like that works on your homepage, at the top of a sales page or as a pinned post.
2. Short social reels from a single line of text
This was my second test.
I asked for a 20-second high-energy reel titled "The AI Profit Boardroom community is the best to learn AI automation".
One clear title, a style and a BPM setting were enough to get a reel I could post.
3. A daily posting machine with Blotato
This is the loop I actually run.
I write the script, the agent makes the motion design, and Blotato posts it automatically.
Blotato's analytics show me which platforms perform best, so I spend more effort where it works.
4. Product promos from the bundled example
The release ships five motion examples, called Motion Future, Product Promo, Showreel, UI Morph and Visual Lesson.
A business could start from Product Promo, swap in its own product and message, and restyle it.
5. Rebranded videos for clients
You can give the agent brand colours and ask it to restyle a video.
You can also feed it a previous example and ask it to turn that into a new motion design.
For an agency, that means one good template can become a branded version for each client.
6. Explainer videos for courses and communities
The Visual Lesson example is built for explaining an idea on screen.
If you run a course or a community, short explainers are an easy way to make a lesson stick.
7. More than video from the same workspace
Home also gives you slide decks, documents, images, websites, HyperFrames and live artifacts.
Live artifacts are live dashboards you can share, which is handy for client reporting.
Recent projects show previews, so it's easy to pick up where you left off.

How Open Design Motion Fits A Content Workflow
Here's the workflow I'd hand a business owner on day one.
| Stage | What you do | What Open Design Motion does |
|---|---|---|
| Idea | You pick one message for the week. | It waits for your prompt. |
| Script | You write one line or a short script. | It reads your prompt, template, BPM and style. |
| Build | You start several projects at once. | It builds them in the background. |
| Review | You preview the video and check the code view if needed. | It shows your recent projects with previews. |
| Edit | You ask for brand colours or a different style. | It rewrites the animation code and re-renders. |
| Export | You export the MP4 or share the project. | It checks the MP4 can play and keeps the source if export fails. |
| Post | You send it to Blotato. | Blotato posts it and shows you which platforms perform best. |
In my setup, every project lands in my Agent OS workspace, so nothing gets lost in downloads folders.

Open Design Motion vs Claude Motion For A Business
Both tools have a similar idea, because you describe a video and AI builds it.
I prefer Open Design, because the results look more interesting and clean to me, and it keeps all my motion designs organised in one place.
For a business, the open-source part matters too, because you choose the agent, the model and where your projects live.
You're not locked into one provider's model, which keeps your costs under your control.
Costs, Limits And Honest Warnings
The tool is free, but your AI model might not be, so pick a free or cheap model while you learn.
The free OpenCode models I showed were free when I recorded, and those offers can change.
There's an optional paid Design Plan with hosted models, and you can skip it if your own agents work.
Linux users have no prebuilt app yet and need to run it from source.
On a Mac, the README warns that the od command can clash with a built-in system tool, so use the Settings → MCP server snippet for coding-agent setups.
The README says scrubbed safety and reliability telemetry is always on, while product analytics and session replay are consent-gated.
Some bundled templates keep their own licences, so check before you resell a template-based video to a client.
I can't promise any income from this, because that depends on your offer, your audience and how consistently you post.

Who Should Use Open Design Motion
Solo creators should use it, because it removes the editing bottleneck that stops most people posting.
Small business owners should use it for trailers, promos and simple explainers.
Agencies should test it for branded client videos and shareable live dashboards.
Teams with a designer should use it to get first drafts faster, then let the designer polish the best ones.
