The best Hermes Agent setup for most businesses is Hermes Desktop with a Nous Portal model as the main brain, a local model as the backup, a plain-text memory vault and one dashboard where every job has a button.

I call it the three-layer setup, because it has a brain, a cockpit and a memory, and it's the stack I run my own business on.

The free setup is my second pick, and the one-click beginner setup is my third.

In this post I rank six setups by the kind of business they suit, and then I show you how an agency, a creator and a small team would actually use each one.

Top 3 Picks At A Glance

  • 🥇 The three-layer setup is the best Hermes Agent setup for a business, because the agent remembers your company and every job has a home.
  • 🥈 The free setup is the best way to test Hermes before you spend anything, because Hermes is free and so are some of the models.
  • 🥉 The one-click beginner setup is the best choice for a non-technical owner, because Hermes Desktop installs like any other app.

How I Ranked These Setups For Business Use

This is my own ranking, based on running Hermes inside my business and teaching it to members of my community.

It isn't a measured benchmark, so I'll tell you plainly where my opinion is doing the work.

I used four business questions.

  • I asked whether a busy owner could get it working without a developer.
  • I asked what it would cost every month once the novelty wore off.
  • I asked whether the agent would remember clients, offers and decisions.
  • I asked whether it would keep working while nobody was at the desk.

What Hermes Agent Is And Why The Setup Matters

Hermes Agent is a free, open-source AI agent from Nous Research.

It can use tools, run commands, browse the web, schedule jobs and remember what you tell it.

Hermes doesn't come with one fixed model, which means you choose the brain.

That's why the setup matters more than the install.

Most people install an agent, play with it for a weekend and then stop using it.

The agent isn't weak.

It simply has nowhere to live, no memory of yesterday and no job running while they sleep.

A good setup fixes those three problems.

The 6 Best Hermes Agent Setups, Ranked

1. The Three-Layer Setup

This is Hermes with a brain, a cockpit and a memory built around it.

The brain is a Nous Portal model with a local model as the backup.

The cockpit is a dashboard, which you can open with hermes dashboard or run through Hermes Desktop.

The memory is a folder of plain-text notes that the agent reads before working and writes to afterwards.

Best for: any owner who wants the agent to know the business.

Cost: the software is free, and the brain is free while you use a free Portal model.

How to get it: install Hermes, run hermes setup --portal, add a backup with hermes fallback add, then create your notes folder.

My 3-Layer Hermes OS guide walks through the full weekend build.

2. The Free Setup

This is Hermes running on a model that costs nothing.

You can pick a model marked free on Nous Portal with hermes model, or you can run ollama launch hermes and choose a free Ollama cloud model.

Best for: testing whether Hermes fits your business before you commit.

Cost: it's $0, with rate limits and token limits.

How to get it: install Hermes, then choose a free model and add a second free model as your fallback.

I cover the free brains in more detail in my free Hermes Agent OS post.

3. The One-Click Beginner Setup

This is Hermes Desktop, downloaded from the Hermes website and installed like a normal app.

Best for: owners and team members who never want to see a terminal.

Cost: the app is free.

How to get it: download the macOS or Windows package, sign in to Nous Portal inside the app and pick a model.

The Mac package only supports Apple Silicon, so check your machine first.

4. The Profile-Per-Job Setup

A profile is a separate copy of Hermes with its own model, memory and rules.

You make one with hermes profile create and use it with hermes -p followed by the name.

Best for: agencies with several clients and operators who want a different brain for each job.

Cost: it depends on the models, and you can reuse a Claude Pro or Max subscription through the official plugin.

How to get it: create one profile for research, one for building and one for each client.

The Claude route is in my Hermes Claude subscription guide, and the plugin is marked experimental.

5. The Always-On Setup

This is Hermes running on a server or in Hermes Cloud, connected to your chat apps.

Best for: teams that want to message the agent from a phone at any hour.

Cost: you pay for a server or for Hermes Cloud, plus your model.

How to get it: install Hermes on a Linux server, run hermes gateway setup, then hermes gateway install and hermes gateway start.

When I covered Hermes Cloud, a Cloud Agent needed $10 in credits or an active Nous subscription to deploy, and it scaled to zero when idle.

6. The Local Private Setup

This is Hermes with a model that runs entirely on your own computer.

Best for: client files, contracts and anything you can't send to a third party.

Cost: it's $0 per month, and the cost is the hardware.

How to get it: install Ollama, pull a local model and point a Hermes profile at it.

My run Hermes free forever guide shows a small model running on an 8GB machine.

How An Agency Would Use The Best Hermes Agent Setup

An agency has the same jobs every week, and that's exactly where an agent earns its place.

I'd start with the three-layer setup on one machine.

Then I'd add one profile per client, so each client's notes and decisions stay separate.

Here's how the jobs map to the parts of the setup.

Agency job Part of the setup that does it How it works
Weekly client reporting A scheduled job You create it with hermes cron create, and it runs on a timer.
Competitor monitoring A long-running Hermes profile It checks sites each morning and writes a short report into the vault.
Content drafts A writing profile It reads the brand notes in the vault before it drafts anything.
Client questions out of hours The messaging gateway Your team messages the agent from Telegram or Slack.
Bigger builds A kanban board You drop a ticket on the board and a Hermes worker picks it up.

In my own setup, bigger jobs become tickets rather than prompts.

I drop a build ticket on a board, a Hermes worker drives the build, and I get on with something else.

I won't promise you a result from that, because your results depend on your offer and your clients.

What I can tell you is that it removes the part where you sit and watch an agent type.

How A Creator Would Use It

A creator's week is research, scripts, titles and repurposing.

The free setup is enough to start, because most of those jobs are easy for a small model to check.

I'd build three notes first.

The about-me note says who you are and how you like your output.

The decisions log holds one line for each decision that matters, such as your publishing days and your brand voice.

The daily log is where each session writes down what it did.

After that, you can say "write Tuesday's post" and the agent already knows what a Tuesday post is.

That one loop of reading before work and writing after work is the whole memory system.

How A Small Team Would Use It

A small team needs the agent to be reachable by everyone, not locked to one laptop.

That's the always-on setup.

The Hermes messaging gateway connects to Telegram, Discord, Slack, WhatsApp, email and a long list of other platforms.

It's one background process that handles your sessions, runs your scheduled jobs and delivers messages.

The business steps are simple.

  1. Put Hermes on a small Linux server and connect to it over SSH.
  2. Run the official install script, then run hermes setup to choose a model.
  3. Run hermes gateway setup and connect the chat app your team already uses.
  4. Run hermes gateway install and hermes gateway start so it survives a reboot.
  5. Check it with hermes gateway status before you tell the team it's live.

If nobody on the team wants to manage a server, Hermes Cloud on Nous Portal is the managed route.

My best Hermes Agent VPS post covers how to choose the server.

Keeping The Bill Under Control

The model is the only part of a Hermes setup that can surprise you with a bill.

I use one rule, which is that the cheap brain is the default and the expensive brain is a choice.

Everyday jobs like summaries, research briefs and inbox triage go to a free or local model.

Hard builds and client-facing final work go to a stronger paid model.

Profiles make that easy, because switching brains is one flag.

hermes insights shows your usage, and hermes usage shows your account rate-limit windows.

A fallback model also protects you, because a rate limit on a free model won't stop the day's work.

The Risks A Business Should Take Seriously

I'd rather you hear the downsides from me than discover them with a client.

The first risk is client data.

A hosted model sees whatever you send it, so read the provider's data terms and keep sensitive files on a local model.

The second risk is approvals.

Hermes asks before it does anything risky, and you should leave that switched on for business work.

The third risk is plugins.

Most catalog plugins are made by independent developers, so read the repository before you install one.

The fourth risk is an open dashboard.

The dashboard binds to your own machine by default, and it should stay that way.

The fifth risk is having no backup.

hermes backup zips your whole Hermes home, and I run it before every update.

There's also an emergency stop, which is hermes pause, and it halts scheduled jobs and new gateway turns.

FAQ: Best Hermes Agent Setup

What is the best Hermes Agent setup for a business?

My pick is the three-layer setup.

That's Hermes with a Nous Portal model as the main brain, a local fallback model, a plain-text memory vault and a dashboard.

Add the always-on gateway once the agent is doing real jobs.

How much does a Hermes Agent setup cost a business?

Hermes Agent is free and open source.

The model is the main cost, and it can be free on a Nous Portal free model or a local model.

An always-on setup adds a server or Hermes Cloud.

Can my team message Hermes Agent from Telegram or Slack?

Yes, because the messaging gateway connects to Telegram, Discord, Slack, WhatsApp, email and many other platforms.

You configure it with hermes gateway setup and run it with hermes gateway install and hermes gateway start.

Is it safe to give Hermes Agent client data?

It depends on where the model runs.

A hosted model receives your prompts, so read that provider's data terms first.

For sensitive files, use a local model so nothing leaves your machine.

Should each client get their own Hermes profile?

Yes, that's how I'd do it.

A profile has its own config, keys, memory and sessions, so one profile per client keeps their context separate.
