If you run a business and you're wondering how to do GEO for website traffic that turns into customers, these are the nine steps I use on my own sites.

GEO means generative engine optimisation, which is getting your business named when someone asks Google AI, Gemini or ChatGPT who to buy from.

That matters for revenue, because an AI answer usually names only a few businesses and everyone else gets skipped.

My workflow is simple, because I export my Google Search Console data, let a free AI agent called Hermes find the topics I can win, and publish case-study pages that a human fact-checks first.

Below I'll show the steps first, then how a local business, a consultant, an online shop and an agency would each run them.

If you'd like my team to look at your business first, book a free one-to-one GEO, AEO AI audit and get a custom game plan.

The 9 Steps To Do GEO For A Business Website

This table shows every step and what it means for a normal business, so you can see the whole job at once.

Step What you do What it means for your business
1 Check who the AI answers name for your buyer questions. You find out whether AI is sending customers to you or to a competitor.
2 Export your Google Search Console data to a CSV file. You see which pages already bring in visitors for free.
3 Ask an AI agent to turn that data into GEO topics. You get a shortlist of questions you're most likely to win.
4 Write one case-study page per topic with an SEO skill. Your real jobs and results become the proof the AI cites.
5 Publish the same answer from different angles in several places. More trusted pages agree that you're the right choice.
6 Publish on new topics within 24 hours. You become the first good answer when something changes in your market.
7 Check crawler access and basic schema. The AI tools can actually read your pages.
8 Fact-check every page by hand, then publish. You protect your reputation and follow Google's 1 October 2026 guidance.
9 Measure clicks and AI impressions, then repeat. You know which topics are paying off before you spend more time.

Steps two to four are the Hermes Agent workflow from my video.

Steps four to six are the three moves I call the answer engine, which are be the source, be everywhere and be first.

Why GEO Matters For A Business Website

Old SEO gave the searcher ten blue links.

If you ranked seventh, you still picked up some enquiries.

AI answers give a short list, maybe one to three names, so there's no room for number seven.

The good news is that the AI isn't guessing.

It reads the pages that rank and sums up what they say, a bit like five friends recommending the same restaurant.

If five good pages say your name, the AI tends to repeat your name.

That's why GEO is really a trust job, because your aim is to get several good pages to agree that you're the answer.

Here's what that looked like on my own screens.

  • For "best geo expert", my content showed up in the Google AI answer at the top and in the first organic spot.
  • For "best AI community", my community ranked first inside Google AI and was listed twice.
  • When I asked AI Mode for the best GEO experts to follow in 2026, it listed me first and linked to my sites.
  • One of my sites went from zero to more than 1,300 clicks a day, and two other sites are on the same trajectory.

Those are my results, not a forecast for your business, but they show the method can work.

Use Case 1: A Local Service Business Runs Steps 1 To 3

Picture a plumber, a dentist or an accountant in one town.

Step one is asking the questions a customer would ask, such as "best emergency plumber in [town]" or "dentist open on Saturday near [area]".

You run each one in Google AI Mode, look for an AI Overview, and ask ChatGPT and Gemini the same thing.

You write down who gets named, which pages get cited and whether you appear at all.

Step two is exporting your Search Console data, which Google's help page describes as a free service, and its Performance report has an export button.

Step three is giving that CSV to Hermes with a plain prompt.

In my video I ask it, "can you analyse this and, based on what's actually working, give me keyword and topic ideas to rank inside AI search engines?"

For a local business, the agent might notice that your emergency call-out page earns most of your non-brand clicks.

That's a strong hint that "emergency" questions are where you can win the AI answer next.

What the agent report looks like

In my own run, Hermes built a report artifact inside the workspace.

It showed total clicks, the brand share of clicks, the non-brand click-through rate and my September clicks.

It listed what was working, such as comparison articles, my Agent OS clusters, the free AI community topic and my Antigravity and Hermes topics.

It finished with averages and a verdict on my best pages.

A local business gets the same kind of report, just with its own services in it.

Use Case 2: A Consultant Uses Step 4 To Become The Named Expert

Step four is where a consultant can win, because the whole point is to be the source.

I give Hermes my SEO skill and access to my sites, such as WordPress or Netlify, so it can draft and publish for me.

My SEO skill is roughly a 100-point checklist, and it writes everything from a case-study angle.

AI Mode describes me as widely recognised as a top practitioner because of public testing and deployment, and that's on my screen in the video.

The lesson for a consultant is that you get named for the work you can show, not the work you claim.

So every page should carry a real project, what you did, what happened and what you learned.

Your case study is simply whatever you work on day to day.

If you test things in Claude, you can export them to Hermes, or you can write the article inside Claude itself.

Google's guide to optimising for generative AI features backs this up, because it recommends first-hand, non-commodity content over summaries of what everyone else says.

Use Case 3: An Online Shop Uses Steps 5 And 6

Step five is be everywhere.

I run multiple websites, each with a different angle, all pointing to the same answer, which is how I can show up two to four times on page one for one search.

I also publish on other platforms, and my subreddit, AI SEO Insider, ranks on page one too.

For an online shop, being everywhere might mean a buying guide on your own site, a how-to video, a comparison on a partner blog and an honest answer in a community thread.

Each piece needs its own angle and its own reason to exist.

Google's guide warns that creating separate pages for every search variation, mainly to manipulate rankings or AI answers, breaks its scaled content abuse policy.

So "everywhere" means genuinely useful takes on one true answer, never copies.

Step six is be first.

I try to publish within 24 hours of a topic appearing, like when I covered "Jev architecture" and "Jev waitlist" the weekend Jev AI dropped.

For a shop, that could be the day a new product launches or the day a supplier changes something your customers care about.

The first good answer often becomes the one the AI cites.

Here is another video where I show how ranking in Google AI Mode works in practice.

Use Case 4: An Agency Runs Steps 7 To 9 For Clients

An agency usually owns the technical checks, the quality control and the reporting.

Step seven is making sure the AI tools can read the client's pages.

Google says there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, but the page must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet.

  • The client's robots.txt file should not block Googlebot from the pages that matter.
  • OpenAI's bots page says sites opted out of OAI-SearchBot won't be shown in ChatGPT search answers.
  • Perplexity's bots guide says PerplexityBot is the crawler that surfaces and links sites in its search results.
  • Search Console's Search generative AI control should be set to include the site, which is the default.

Google's guide also says there's no special schema needed for its AI features and that Google Search ignores llms.txt files.

Normal structured data still helps with rich results, so a quick pass in the Rich Results Test is worth it.

Step eight is the fact-check.

Google updated its page on using generative AI content on 1 October 2026, and it says it's "critical to manually factcheck and review all AI-generated content" before publishing.

That review covers titles, meta descriptions, structured data and image alt text, not just the body text.

For an agency, one wrong claim on a client page is a trust problem, so a human signs off every page before it goes live.

Step nine is measurement.

Re-run the step one questions every couple of weeks and log what changed.

Google's guide also points to the Generative AI performance report in Search Console, which shows impressions from Google's AI features and rolled out to all sites as of 31 August 2026.

That gives the agency something real to put in front of the client each month.

What To Expect Once Your GEO Pages Go Live

AI Mode does send traffic, and I show that on screen in my video.

The bigger change is usually that the right customers start hearing your name before they ever reach your site.

I'd still be careful with expectations, because nobody can guarantee what an AI answer will say.

Some topics move quickly, and some don't move at all, which is why the measurement step exists.

One more honest caveat is that Search Console shows Google data, so it won't tell you everything ChatGPT or Gemini is doing.

Mistakes That Cost Businesses Customers

These are the mistakes I'd avoid if it were my business.

  • Generic pages with no real case study give the AI nothing worth citing.
  • Copying the same page across several sites is weaker than writing genuinely different angles.
  • Paying for "GEO hacks" like llms.txt files wastes money, because Google says its Search ignores them.
  • Letting an AI draft go live without a human check goes against Google's guidance.
  • Giving up after one page is a mistake, because the method works through repetition across several pages and platforms.

FAQ: How To Do GEO For A Business Website

Is GEO worth it for a small business website?

It can be, because AI answers name only a few businesses and you want to be one of them.

The steps are free to run, but nobody can guarantee what an AI answer will say.

What does GEO cost to do yourself?

The tools in my workflow are free, because Search Console is a free Google service, Hermes Agent is open source and OpenCode includes free models.

Your main cost is the time it takes to write real case studies and check them.

Can a local business do GEO?

Yes, a plumber, dentist or accountant can follow the same nine steps.

The key is answering real customer questions with real jobs and keeping your details consistent everywhere.

How do agencies do GEO for client websites?

Most agencies own the technical checks, the human fact-check and the monthly measurement.

The client supplies the real case studies, because those are what the AI ends up citing.

How do I know if GEO is working for my website?

Re-run your buyer questions every couple of weeks and log who gets named.

Also watch the Generative AI performance report and the normal Performance report in Search Console.

Is the free strategy session a written GEO report?

No, it's a free one-to-one call rather than a written report.

My team looks at your site, your competitors and the keywords you're closest to winning, then gives you a custom game plan for Google and AI search.
